Re: What Did You Do Today?

Had a lady in the ER today.

Was complaining of a migraine. She was laughing and joking around with her b/f, eating chips, drinking soda and being such a happy camper.

I suspect "junkie". I confirmed it when I tried taking a past history of allergies.

"I'm nearly allergic to everything, even Tylenol. But I can take Percocet".

Does it look like I have the word "Idiot" stamped on my forehead?

I told the DON and she politely told her to get the **** outta her ER.

I was actually pretty pissed off. People like her abuse the system and cause complications - namely making other people wait longer, people who have legitimate concerns and health issues.

I SHIT you not - some of the most common complaints people bring into the ER? Broken nails. I'm NOT kidding you. Broken fingernails. And they use EMS transportation too. It's a bloody crime that EMS personel and Triage RNs can't decline such calls. We've had people come in with bubblegum stuck in their hair, wanting their earwax cleaned, a girl sho scratched her leg while shaving.... My DON tells me enough crazy stories.

We had an incident last week - three people were so fed up of waiting in triage in the ER that they went two blocks down the road, used a phone and called in an ambulance! The DON was SO livid, she called the cops and the cops cave them citations for abusing EMS. I felt like giving the cops a hug.

The healthcare system needs to be fixed - too many issues.

Ok, rant over

You won't believe the story about a certain part of the female anatomy.

Someday, I'll get around to talking about it. It is not meant for childrens ears

Re: What Did You Do Today?

Healthcare is a finite resource with infinite demand; especially when people think that someone else is paying for it.

Re: What Did You Do Today?

I really feel like suggesting to the ER nurses to put up a common fund for public education.

We used to have a sign in the local VA:

"Is this an emergency?"

And it proceeded to list a whole bunch of proceedures. At the very end, near the bottom, it read: "If this was a real emergency, you would not have had the time to read this sign"

I think that sign needs to be blown up and posted at the front of every ER.

It maynot do much but maybe goody-two-shoes with an hang nail won't be screwing up triage time.

Sadly, I also realise that the ER is often the primary care provider (and sometimes, the ONLY careprovider) for a whole bunch of people, primarily the uninsured.

Re: What Did You Do Today?

Ok, I'm going to go ahead and post it.

if the MODs think it's too bad, please delete it:

We had this 20 year old college girl come in complaining of a bump *ahem* "down there"...

The charge nurse put on his gloves and did the exam. He was feeling around her perineum and she exclaims: " That's it!"

So he taps with his fingers some more around the area and asks "Is this it?"

And she says "Yep! There it is!"

The nurse sighs, pulls of his gloves and gently tells her:

"That's your clitoris. It's SUPPOSED to be there!"

Re: What Did You Do Today?

The "uninsured" should go to a doctor and pay him the same as they'd go to the grocery store to a bag of groceries.

This going to an ER so someone else will have to pay for it is a bunch of crap.
