Re: What Did You Do Today?

Hehe, my dad's planning on retiring this spring. He says he's looking forward to being a Wal Mart greeter.

I got sprung from the hospital today! Just in time to enjoy the warmest day of the week here. Unfortunately, I'm headed back in tomorrow, but spending today out in the sunshine with the warm breeze was absolutely bitchin'

I volunteered down at the school to be my oldest daughter's 'class mom' - it was priceless. Sexism lives.

Good about the hospital. Of course, it's been sunny & 70's all week here in Sacramento.

'class mom' ? What's that all about, and what does it entail? Sounds like a hoot!

Oughta be, but isn't. It's more like a "we need classroom volunteers to help us clean up after the savages you refuse to civilise at home" kind of thing. That, or 'human shield'.

But they really aren't used to 47 year old male volunteers.

I'm insanely jealous of your weather... we're all more than ready for winter to leave WV.

My mother volunteered to be 'room mom' once. It lasted about a week.

Blimey..classroom volunteers! The Politically Correct' brigade wouldn't allow that sort of thing over here. You would need to undergo 'special training' in case you did something to upset the little perishers. The special training ought to be run by the SAS, but unfortunately it would be down to the Education department of the Local Authority. From what I've seen on my travels, the American youth/children seem much more civilised than the odious little twerps who wander the streets of Scotland. Mrs E and I were quite impressed by their good manners. I came to the conclusion that they must use some form of hi-tech American programme over there to get them to this stage.....flogging the hide off the little darlings perhaps?

I have some concern with the current PC attitude that any man that wants to participate in his child's upbringing must be some kind of child molester. And, if you want to be a foster parent or work for pay in a facility for children in California, you do require training and a criminal background check. If you run a daycare from your home, you have to give up your right to privacy - the state may enter and inspect at any time.

I know you're joking, and I don't think most kids are raised all that well, but I'll tell you what's working for my family.

We don't just let things go. One of us is at home all the time, and our kids are being taken care of by the right people - their parents. We don't beat our kids, though spankings aren't unknown - they're just reserved for the truly exceptional, and usually for something that could cause injury or accident. An example would be reaching for things on the stove, etc., where the consequences are truly horrible and yet unimaginable to a child.

The idea is that some things have to go right past the frontal lobes into the hindbrain, and a few swats to the butt can be the fastest way there.

But if they're acting up - and that includes rudeness, disobedience, whatever - it isn't allowed to go unremarked, and there's always a consequence, be it sitting in a chair, no TV, no treats, etc.

And we always - ALWAYS! - leave room to escalate. If sitting in the chair isn't working, there's standing in the corner, and so on.

Now, my kids are four and seven, and haven't really gotten old enough to cause real problems. But it's my guess that by teaching them self-discipline now, they'll have it when they need it.

I agree, but I know only too well, from my working life, that child molesters try and gain access to children through this type of work. Whilst its a pain in the rear, in essence its only trying to protect the vulnerable.

I was quite serious! Both Mrs E and I have commented many times on how well mannered American children are. However I dare say you have your fair share of little perishers as well.

I think you have summed up in that paragraph what good parenting is all about. Again drawing on the experience of my working life, I know that many children don't get that loving, caring environment. Over here it's not uncommon for some kids never to get a home cooked meal or a hug. Both my kids are in their 20's and I'm thankful to say that I have a wonderful relationship with both of them. Many parents can't say that...and that is very sad.

Re: What Did You Do Today?

I sat around feeling nostalgic and homesick.

As a consequence, I've fallen behind on my packing schedule. I did manage to get rid of the paperwork/waste. Now I need to tackle the clothes and books. Following which comes the dreaded "clean up the apartment".

Blech!

Don't you know that if you are a nurse and happen to be male, you are:

1. Gay... or
2. A pervert who likes to feel people up... or
3. A combination and 1. and 2.

?

You'll always see a "female chaperone" present when a male has to do a physical exam on a female but almost never the case when it is the other way 'round. Nobody bats an eyelid when a female patient (pregnant or otherwise) refuses a "male nurse" despite the fact that the physician and/or anesthesiologist happens to be male and will be present during the procedure. There is raging debate as to "should male nurses be allowed to work OB floors" and yet how many folks question the same of "male physicians/OBs/GYNs" ? How many of you males who've hade the misfortune of being hospitalized were ever offered the choice of a male "caregiver" or were asked if it was ok with you if your caregiver was female?

I could write pages and pages on end.

cheers,
