Moments In Life Marked By Certain Music

There are songs that I listen to that remind me of a certain time in my life (not that i've had a very long life haha) but every time I hear them it either cheers me up, saddens me, or just makes me remember the good 'ol days. Am I crazy? Is this normal? I assume other people have this too. Here are some examples...

Whenever I listen to Led Zeppelin, I think of hanging out at my friend Alex's house all summer just sitting around doing nothing. He's the one that got me into classic rock and we'd just sit around a listen to Led Zeppelin, or Pink Floyd or anything.

When I listen to Alice in Chains I remember this girl that I used to hang out with and we kind of went out, I've explained excessively on here. I burned her "Dirt" and she really liked it and I listened to it pretty much non-stop during that time, and after when I was really depressed.

Nirvana's "In Utero" makes me remember my friend Rachel who is older than me and is my older sister's best friend. The last time she visited (which was nearly a year ago. she moved away a few years ago) she was really into Nirvana and we always listened to this album when we drove around.

Good times...
What are yours???

I know exactly what you mean.

I've been re-listening to a lot of Floyd and Radiohead just because right now I have no tolerance for very loud or abrasive music. Also, I got the book Another Brick In The Wall and have been reading it while simultaneously going through the albums.

For me:

"No Rain" by Blind Melon. Makes me think of the music and videos of MTV in the mid-nineties. I loved the sound of alt. rock at that time.

"Can't Change Me" by Chris Cornell - Eighth grade and the summer after when I first became aware of music in the sense that I have now. Played on the local alternative rock station. Reminiscent of my first "heartbreak."

The Wall I cannot bring myself to listen to. All I ever listened to or watched while in a very deep depression. Major break up and onslaught of health problems. Also, for the same reasons stated above, I cannot listen to: "Hanging On A Moment" by Lifehouse, "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton, or "Yellow" by Copldplay.

Most of my Queen albums remind of the time in my life when I first recieved them. "The Miracle" Halloween of freshman year of high school, "The Game," Christmas of the same year.

I understand completely what you mean. Floyd was part of my life that I care to forget at times but it is also times I remember a lot when I hear that specific tune.

I remember the first Flyod song I ever listen to was Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 I think I was like 12 or 13 I don't remember exactly but I do remember being in my step-fathers car and it came on and he turned it on. I know how most kids would sit there and go "Oh man Mom and Dad turn that old stuff off." I know I did that a couple times. But when this song came on I was like stunned to it. I just sat there listening to the lyrics and I remember that guitar. Oh man that guitar. David Gilmore is one hell of a guitarst. Anyway I just kept listening to it and I looked over to my father and saw him singing it and I started to pick up on that part where the kids say "Teacher leave us kids alone" and started to sing it with him. Ever since that day I was a Floyd fan.

I also remember when I was going to high school and started to get into acid. (Which I dont do anymore) We all used to get togeather and watch the movie The Wall. Ever since that every time I hear the wall I get that feeling like when you tripping. Man its hard to explain but if anyone who did it knows what I mean. Its wierd. Also listening to the wall I see the movie along with it. I kinda wish I could go back to not seeing the movie so I can imagine but now I see the movie with the music. Its cool though. "Z"

Most of the classic Scorpions ballads (Holiday, Still Loving You etc) remind me of Junior College (That's Junior and Senior High School) years. Me and my mates, just freshly out of school, bunking classes, buying beer illegaly from back-doors of bars, sitting and drinking on the beach (also illegal) while watching for cops... sitting in the rain, with the wind and waves lashing.

Oh yeah, good times.

This IS a good thread

Personally, when I listened to The Wall for the first time, I realized that someone can really say something through music and that nowaday music appears as if written by kindergardeners. Pink Floyd really opened the doors for me and is one of the man reasons I first picked up a guitar. A memory the song Wish You Were Here triggers a time my and a couple of friends were up all night jsut disscussing deep thoughts of troubles and society and I said lets put on some Floyd. We just sat there and listened to the entire album straight through without saying a word and pondered its lyrics and discovered a little something about basic human interaction that I won't forget.

OH MAN! I can't believe I forgot about this!

"Dirt" isn't the AiC album that reminds me of Megan. That would have to be Jar of Flies.

I went deer hunting with my dad (my last time, because we've been hunting for 5 years and it's been 4 years since we've shot a deer) last year, and I took my CD player, with that ONE CD. We sat in that deer blind for 5 hours and I listened to the album over and over, end to end. It was actually the day after I bought it because I bought it on New Year's Day and we went hunting the next day because he was off work or something like that. I listen to this, and I imagine staring down at the ground, looking through a hole to see if there's any deer out there, looking back at the dirt.

I used to run this 10k loop once a week, and each time I'd listen to The Wallflower's "Red Letter Days". It was just the right lenght, so that I could gauge how fast to run, and when the last few songs started, I'd have to kick up the pace. Now when I listen to it, my muscles twitch and my breathing speeds up.

Peter Gabriel's "Father, Son" makes me bawl like a baby.

Hail to the Theif is what really sticks out to me.
It was the first time i'd actually heard Radiohead (w/ an exception to Creep) and man i don't know
Something from it just changed the way i think about things, i was going through a wierd period and just felt wierd because everyone around me was changing so much and i just wanted them to be like they were. Radiohead is the best when you're feeling lonely.
Also, Smashing Pumpkins was the force that helped me get through some of the hardest times i've had so far. Something about it, you can make almost every song whatever you want, it can be angry, sad, or even happy.
If it weren't for Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins i seriously doubt i'd be here today, or at least as sane as i am...heh..

Re: Moments In Life Marked By Certain Music

There was this girl that liked Alex (Reco) and they kind of went out for awhile until one fateful spring break (of this year) she started liking me and vice versa. The entire week was very stressful and Alex got really mad at me and one night we were all driving down this one road and Alex was driving really damn fast and dangerously because he was angry and we were listening to "When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin. Some songs from that period are: "Alabama Song" by the Doors, a lot of Radiohead songs, and some others I forget.

Also, whenever I listen to Pyramid Song (radiohead), Rhinoceros (smashing pumpkins), Man In The Box (alice in chains), or like spinning plates (radiohead), I go back to the night that Alex and that girl and her friend snuck over to my house at like 3 in the morning...those are the songs I listened to while I waited for them to come over and that night I kissed her for the first time and we were listening to Man in the Box (it was the first thing that came on when i pressed play on my stereo. they were climing out the window and they weren't doing it quietly so i had to turn on music so nobody outside my room could hear people going out the window).

Music that reminds me of people or times really grabs onto my heart and makes me sad. Even if it's good times, I still get really sad. There's much more to that story but the emotions are too hard to explain to anyone who wasn't there.

Re: Moments In Life Marked By Certain Music

Money and Brain Damage always remind me of my ex-boyfriend and the summer after I graduated from high school.
I played DSotM for him while were hanging out, and even though I could tell it wasn't exactly his type of music, I remember thinking how sweet it was that he pretended to be really into it for me.

John Mayer's first album is just my whole freshman year of college.

A lot of Bright Eyes is so 'breakup' music for me.

And, that dance version of 9 to 5 will always remind me of going out to Vice with my friends and dancing until morning.

Re: Moments In Life Marked By Certain Music

so many memories...

The Wall, Blackfield, Collapse the light into earth ~Porcupine tree, Layla ~clapton, and Pachelbel's canon all remind me of a certain girl i'll never forget, and helped me get through some touch times.

Time, high hopes, bike, us and them all remind me of a long car trip with my brother, and the first time i heard floyd.

Anything by dire straits remind me of this cool friend from high school.

Thick as a brick reminds me of my friend joel and i singing jethro tull on the way home from a concert all night long.

Fade to black ~metallica reminds me of my brother, another road trip.

Each small candle ~rog reminds me of a friend when she was really mad at the world and all the evil and violence, so i sent her this song and she's had it on her profile ever since.
