Buying a bass - help!

Hey all

I'm looking to get my dearly beloved a Bass for crimbo and just don't know where to start.....I play flute and Sax so have no idea on what's good or bad for a beginner. Any ideas? Thanks

No....Mostly Floyd, Zep, Skynard and some Genesis...The heaviest it'll get is AC/DC (only cos the kids play it and it'd be nice to jam with them)
This guy has never played a note in his life though, so It could be many moons before anythying resembling a song appears...ha ha
Can't really afford too much - 200 English quid tops ?
