Vintage Value????

I was chatting with an acquaintance of mine (female, in her late 50's) today and the subject of music came up. She asked if I played and instrument, and when I told her that I played guitar, she informed me that she "used to, but not in a very long time".

We chatted guitars for a bit, then she informed me that she still had the guitar her parents bought her in the 50's. I assumed that it was a basic accoustic. She then asked me if I'd take a look at it and let her know if it was any good or not.....

We went inside and she produced a vintage 1955 Fender Esquire, butterscotch yellow, MINT condition, original case and original 1955 Fender amp, I couldn't tell what model....

It played exquisitely... It could be brand spanking new..

Does anyone have any idea of the value of this these days?

I was speachless... She offered to sell it to me, but she's been a family friend for some time and I wouldn't feel right taking advantage on price.. On the other hand.. I doubt I could afford what it's really worth, and I know I'll never see another one like it..

Re: Vintage Value????

Wow.

I wouldn't even dare make a guess, but I bet a serious collector would go 5 figures without batting an eye.

Re: Vintage Value????

And I mean well into 5 figures. Mint 55 Fender products simply do not exist anymore.

Your friend should contact a serious auction firm like Christie's Auction House in NY.

Or, she could sell it to her good friend Dave, who could really appreciate it, for a nominal sum.

I don't get it.

Why pay her anything? I always favor the five-finger discount myself.

Re: Vintage Value????

With looking at that link, I bet she could get 15k for the guitar amp and case.
Even more than that if she put on Ebay.

Re: Vintage Value????

That is really shocking. It's always the people who don't know/care about the things they have, that end up with the expensive antiques.
