OBC Misleading?

Around 6 this morning, I decided to pop in Obscured By Clouds and enjoy a day of no school. Now before I tell you what I felt as the songs progressed, I need to explain that I know a CD can't be composed of all sad/dark and all happy/powerful moods, but from OBC I felt like the first song excited me and then the next song was a sadder tune. They just kept going on from one mood to the next and back and forth. I felt like I was being tricked into believing that "oh, this is the direction it's going in." I've never felt this way about any other Floyd album. Ever. But I liked it...
Anyone else get that?

i kinda feel that with dsotm, where it starts slow then gets faster and goes back slow again a bunch of times, but i havent noticed it with obc. and obc doesnt make me feel happy or sad, its just awesome music. i mean, the first two tracks are pretty similar, but to put two totally different moods for them... i cant say i feel the same way

It's a soundtrack album.

It's called juxtaposition. Placing things side by side for comparison or contrast. It's what makes art interesting.

Re: OBC Misleading?

You know it's only Pink Floyd's style to mess with emotion...and OBC is very moody...that and More, and Dark Side.., practically schizophrenic. Like More?

Re: OBC Misleading?

I feel this way about Saucerful, not ObC. First I feel excited/happy (Let there be More Light), then sad/lovesick (Remember a Day), then "revengeful" (word?) (Set the Controls), then happy while disappointed (Clegg), then scared and lost (Saucerful), then relieved but sad (Seesaw), and finaly careless and happy (Jugband Blues ofcourse). But thats just how I interpret it all. The whole idea of "mixed emotions" as described by careful w/ axe, seems very incorperated in most of Floyd's music.

Re: OBC Misleading?

Fixxy's point, when he says OBC a soundtrack album, is that it isn't supposed to flow as an album, rather the songs fit different parts of the movie. Thus, as the movie's tone changes, so do the songs... just like More. With ASOS, it's lack of continuity can be traced to the fact that they were young, and were probably trying for a hit. Also, on all three albums, at least 3 members contribute lyrics, unlike WYWH-TFC.

I doubt they were trying to make a hit. Not with all those instrumentals. I mean this was around the time that they were producing AHM and Echoes. But I do agree with the idea of the music conforming to the emotions of the film.

Re: OBC Misleading?

I think they concentrated their "hit-making" powers into the early singles, which were left off the album.
