"Well, shall we pick up Syd?"

That is the gist of it.

He was unable to function with the band, or function on his own. He depended on them for a ride because he was unable to do such things himself. After the band hired Dave to fill in for Syd on several occasions, they just decided not to pick him up for a gig.
