I was chatting with an acquaintance of mine (female, in her late 50's) today and the subject of music came up. She asked if I played and instrument, and when I told her that I played guitar, she informed me that she "used to, but not in a very long time".

We chatted guitars for a bit, then she informed me that she still had the guitar her parents bought her in the 50's. I assumed that it was a basic accoustic. She then asked me if I'd take a look at it and let her know if it was any good or not.....

We went inside and she produced a vintage 1955 Fender Esquire, butterscotch yellow, MINT condition, original case and original 1955 Fender amp, I couldn't tell what model....

It played exquisitely... It could be brand spanking new..

Does anyone have any idea of the value of this these days?

I was speachless... She offered to sell it to me, but she's been a family friend for some time and I wouldn't feel right taking advantage on price.. On the other hand.. I doubt I could afford what it's really worth, and I know I'll never see another one like it..
Very nice story...your friend is lucky to have such a nice guitar...now be a gentleman and help her sell that guitar so she can get the right kind of money for it...

Saludos.

I dunno about THAT... if she does auction it off, where is the guitar going to end up? In a glass box somewhere, hanging on a wall? Maybe it would be better off in the care of a loving owner like Fulghum who would play it all the time and treat it right.

Perhaps she could let you borrow it for a while, just to see how much pleasure it gives you. Then when someone gets round to appraising it she'll be reluctant to take it away from you! Well, it's a nice thought anyway.

bring it to her attention how much it could potentially go for. then, whatever is her offer is her offer. if you're still willing to pay it will be indicative of a.) how much you want it b.) how much the guitar and money means to her. No harm, no foul.

You could tell her you're interested in buying it, even though it's worth alot more. Then leave it up to her.

I may borrow it to record a few tracks on the new project I'm working on.. She has already said that would be fine....

I have given her some direction as to how to find the true value. I have put her in touch with Fender directly.. via their website.. I'm sure they will let her know fair market value.. She has supplied them with the serial numbers..

We'll see..
