Re: Pink Floyd is dead

Technically, they've been pretty much deceased since the late 70's.

But still....

Ok- From the horse's mouth (Not Mr Ed. This one plays guitar)- "I've got no plans to resurrect (Floyd)".

That's it then.

(hypothetical continuance) "...that is, unless EMI wishes to offer me...okay...each of us at least a million pounds sterling net to produce a single album of old and new stuff (aside: now maybe I can make use of the hundreds of useless snippets I have hanging about)."

Gah!!! what a mercenary! Sounds more like Roger to me.

Pink Floyd is dead. Long live Pink Floyd!

Re: Pink Floyd is dead

BUT--that's not an absolute denial. Mr. Gilmour actually dodged the question the way it was phrased, and I suspect he dodged it quite intentionally. "Has Pink Floyd split up?" And instead of a simple yes or no, he answers by saying he has no plans...notice that in that whole answer, you NEVER hear a committed "no." He never uses the word "split" in his answer.

True, it looks very bleak for Pink Floyd. I am not about to deny that. I just want to say that the way he's phrased the answer leaves him open to change his mind at any time. Now, whether that's likely? I've got my doubts. But still...it's an interesting thing he's done here.

And you know what? The solo avenue is definitely not closed. After all, look at all these gigs Mr. Gilmour has been doing. It seems that as soon as he performs one, another date and venue are announced. It's been like that for several months now.

And who knows what Mr. Wright is doing, and not talking about?

Now, as for Mr. Waters, I will be VERY anxious to hear about the album and Ca Ira, if he decides to discuss those at the press conference. I am quite interested in both.

Re: Pink Floyd is dead

You're too intense FloydWaters, way way...

David could very well have vehemently said "Hell yes!" to the PF split question and still have been able to change his mind. What difference does it make?

As far as the fans are concerned, it is highly unlikely that Pink Floyd (DG, RW, NM, & AN Other if not RWaters) will ever perform again as Pink Floyd, whether to produce new stuff or rehash old stuff.

No point deluding oneself into thinking otherwise. (Hint: In case of nuclear detonation, Duck & Cover)

Pink Floyd is dead. Long live Pink Floyd,
Byron

No, not overly intense...just trying to make sure we don't jump to final conclusions too soon.

Whatever happens, we have the albums and the memories!

Re: Pink Floyd is dead

Who knows..???
I really hope they will tour again...but on the other hand...I will come to see Rog next year, I would deff. come to see Dave (if ever), I will come to see Ricky if he'd be touring (I doubt it though) and Nick as well.
So instead of one possible concert I hope to see four
No it's not serious but still...
I can't phone Dave and say - hell, you need to record a new Floyd album ! But even if I'd can...what he would tell me ? (see my signature).

Re: Pink Floyd is dead

Ahhhh...a debate about the real Floyd. For argument's sake, perhaps I'll say that the 'real' Floyd ended when Roger's ego swelled beyond proportion after WYWH. I would like to propose a new scenario: Pink Floyd eventually died after Rick Wright stopped contributing (or was snuffed out, whatever version you believe). Rick's input is missed on Animals and The Wall. What do you all think??

Re: Pink Floyd is dead

It has merit. But Animals is a fine testament to the fact that if Roger could have held held his burgeoning ego in check, they would have continued to make very fine music together.

Cheers,

Mark

Re: Pink Floyd is dead

Echorec--would you say, then, that Pink Floyd made a return with The Division Bell, since Mr. Wright was back to full status and contributing?

Re: Pink Floyd is dead

Yeah, I agree with Echorec. The real Floyd died when rick Wright stopped contributing , not when roger left. The expression of Roger's ideas is far more musicaly interesting in DSOTM than in The Wall. Rick Wright was essential in the sound (the soul) of the Floyd.

Re: Pink Floyd is dead

You know me, JW! While I accept Mr. Waters' work, I find that Mr. Wright is integral to the sound of the Floyd. I mean, listen to Broken China. Normally I try not to compare solo albums to the entire Floyd because that is unfair to the artist in question (whoever it be), but with that album, it is REALLY hard not to...

Re: Pink Floyd is dead

Sorry FW, but I really must disagree. IMHO Broken China could hardly hold a candle to any Pink Floyd offering.

I heard your many recommendations and finally bought it, and after serveral hearings - and acknowledging my own oft repeated suggestion to "keep listening and it might become a favourite" - I REALLY cannot see it ever being freqeuently played.

Don't get me wrong, it's not all bad. Though I might have enjoyed it more with David doing the singing instead.
