I shall be seeing the Kings of Leon in April. How are they? I'm not familiar with them at all.

I like Kasabian, The Music, The Zutons, Franz Ferdinand, and Muse of the ones listed by Dr Cheese and W'ikky. I haven't heard some of the others.

Re: Alternative and Indie

This is a good thread I don't know why it's so short!

There are so many good "indie" bands like: The Arcade Fire, Interpol, Spoon, The Shins, My Morning Jacket, Broken Social Scene, Death From Above 1979, Kings of Convenience, LCD Soundsystem, Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists, Metric, The Faint, Cursive, Minus the Bear, Circa Survive, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Sleater-Kinney, The Postal Service, The Walkmen, Bloc Party, The Notwist, M83, Clinic, Kasabian, British Sea Power, The Bravery, ummmmm.........some others?

Come to think of it I'm not sure if ALL of those are considered "indie" but damn, they're good.

Re: Alternative and Indie

I'd consider the ones that are "good" to not be indie.

Re: Alternative and Indie

Great lists - I can't wait to start checking out some of these bands.

A couple of my favorites on the metal side:
Hatebreed, Mastadon, Ill Nino, Dropbox, Clutch, The Step Kings (if they are still together), Coheed and Cambria (still Indie?)

and not metal:
Donna the Buffalo, The Burns Sisters, Housewives on Prozac

And for something COMPLETELY different: Dog Fashion Disco. Do not judge them by any one song because they are so diverse. Overall sort of a graphic-novel band. http://www.dogfashiondisco.com/index2.html but be forwarned - they have a way of being addictive- if you don't just hate them -

Yes, i really love both Alternative and Indie music. Insead of recommending hundreds of band like you are doing, ill just pick out the best. I'd like you to do the same, so people actully will listen to your recommendations. In my case its Dinosaur Jr, Death From Above 1979 and Radiohead (if thats alternative)

=)

Re: Alternative and Indie

I'm not very sure about this but in the early 90's, after Nirvana's breakthrough, a whole lot of bands appeared under the alternative banner. The situation went on and they were still considered alternative when, by '94-'96, they were clearly mainstream bands selling millions and millions of records.

I understand that an alternative band is the "alternative" (an option) to mainstream music. That was the case when Soundgarden made their first records and all you could listen to in the radio or on TV was Phil Collins, Madonna and the like (perhpas things haven't changed so much since then...). But what happens when the "alternative" becomes mainstream as it did in the early-mid 90's?

Sorry, I was just wondering about the status of bands like Radiohead or Sygur Ross though I totally agree with the fact that putting labels to music isn't very useful.
