Lightbulb Duplicate Thread Saga

I have seen a few posts relating to the rules regarding duplicate threads, and I have to agree with the members who prefer to start new threads, even if the topic has been covered elsewhere. Furthermore, I believe that threads that go "dead" (30 days with no replies sounds dead to me), should be archived and members should not be able to dig them up simply by posting a new reply in them. I know this is the complete opposite of what is suggested for duplicate threads, but I find it annoying when I click on a supposedly new thread, only to find that it was started back in 2002 or earlier! I believe ideas evolve, and someone's opinion back in 2002 will likely differ from a present perspective.

Not only do I voice my opinion, I also offer a solution. If a duplicate thread is started, then the similar threads could be shown as links at the beginning of the thread, which could be viewed at discretion.

Just an un-caffeinated opinion.

Cheers.

Y'know, that's a good idea sdaze. My only fear is that there literally aren't enough hours in the day to want to track down all of those DDT links and as for 'archiving' inert threads, a whilke back, I did go through a couple of the fora and delete all the 'closed' threads manually, but that took me the best part of about 6-10 hours to do and Real Life calls, on occasion.

Not in any way a critical response, just speaking from my own experience.

Thanks for your comments Mark.
I wasn't sure about the technical side of dealing with DDT's.
Maybe there's a solution that doesn't create extra work for MOD's.

Cheers.

Well the obvious would be to NOT create any DDTs in the first place

Speaking as a MOD of two other forums, I can vouch for the fact that closing DDTs (or mergining them) are a royal pain in the behind. The searching and amalgamation process gets weary after a while.

I'm not faulting anyone - just stating things as I have found them.

cheers,

My php isn't the best in the world, but I have dealt with it, updating and modifying the code for my own forum, and I can say (to the best of my knowledge), that there's no practical way in which this can be automated. Feel free to prove me wrong, like I say, my php isn't great.

Re: Duplicate Thread Saga

You were saying that you have fresh ideas and concepts yeah? So why not post them in a thread that was started in 2002 and bring fresh ideas to that thread as opposed to eating up bandwidth with DDTs?

cheers

Re: Duplicate Thread Saga

and you know what, just because i'm one of these seemingly mean and nasty mods, and just because I'm sick of this bollocks, and just because you joined a site only to complain about its rules, I'm going to close this thread.
Paulo's said it once, and he'll say it a million times, and i'm going to repeat it, if you don't like the rules and guidelines, don't join. If you do join, stop whining about said rules and guidelines, I honestly have better things to do around here then close YET ANOTHER thread about the DDT issue. Joining a site is like signing a contract, if you don't like the terms of the contract, don't sign the damn thing. If you have a problem with this, PM me or Paulo (That's The Piper)

cheers
