Yes maybe in your opinion, but this man's life/death clearly isn't. But let's not make this thread turn in a religious debate.

Even if I'm an atheist, I had an enormous respect for this man! He did so much for all of us even if we didn't always agree with him. He's been one of the best pope... He deserves everybody's respect! R.I.P. John Paul II (Jean Paul II in my own language...)

As an unpracticing Catholic I kind of paid attention to this story. Regardless if you are religious or not, the man had some good things to say about life in general (charity etc). He set about trying to change the world and tried to bridge the gap between faiths. Traditionally Popes have done more harm than good, but not in this case. JP2 fought Communism, tried to broker peace, was against the Iraq invasion (I give points for that even if I disagreed) and even gave Bono an audience. I'd say the man did a a lot of good for the world. Now I know some are gonna cry foul, saying he was against population controls, for the repression of women, etc, but I think it balances out for the better.

Indeed, as a pro-choice woman I hold huge respect for this man. The compassion and goodwill that he held for all the peoples of this world is remarkable. He single handedly (at least I think he did anyway) changed the face of the Catholic church, the vatican was no longer a far off land for the catholic people of this world, instead, in his little popemobile he traveled the world and touched the live of many who would never have been able to see him before. The images of him with the Dalai Lama and the leaders of the Jewish faith are revolutionary for the Catholic faith to say the least. So really, I don't think we can blame him for his conservative views on marriage and life. May he rest in peace cheers

My great grand aunt (who is incidentaly, also fighting for her life as I type) had the opportunity to meet with him in private. The Pope granted her an audience in respect and recognition of her work in social services and in the upliftment of the poor and charity. She left me with the impression that he was very much an honourable man.
