What is Progressive Rock???

A friend asked me this question and i can't get him a good answer.

The definition or just the differences between the other sub-genres.

It's music that is interesting and corny and long and has lots of instrumenta stuff. tee hee. and submarines

well I think that Prog rock is anything that doesn't follow the normal conventions of rock.. actually scrap that.. that's stupid. I really can't describe it myself. I suggest you find some Prog rock and play it for him and let him make up his own mind about what it is.

It does a descent job trying to define it. Personally, I find prog is music that fuses genres and comes out with a new sound, a new style.

the band Yes, pretty much defines what progressive rock is...although im sure there are numerous variations of the progressive rock sound.

I disagree. Yes only represents one type of prog. There are other groups that I would consider prog, but are extremely different (the first one that comes to mind is Radiohead).

It can't really be described...I mean you may say it's stuff that's new and interesting but that includes a lot of bands that aren't considered "prog".

I don't know if Radiohead would consider themselves Progressive Rock. Thom Yorke notoriously hates Rock and Roll.

When I think Progressive Rock I think:

Long
Self-indulgent
Serious
Bombast

Well other people obviously do and it's an interesting enough discussion. Frankly with comments like that, I don't care much about your opinion so if I were you I'd contribute or not bother with the thread.
