im the first person to agree that knowing too much background info destroys the experience. For example, my favourite album of all time was at one stage the Wall, but I realised after reading analysis after analysis that i was just enjoying it less, and it was better when it seemed more ambiguous. It can work the other way, though. For example, 'The Madcap Laughs' is far more intriguing when you know some background info on Syd and appreciate that he was suffering from skizophrenia. Songs like 'Dark Globe' and 'Late Night' wouldnt be nearly as powerful as they are if I didnt know anything about Syd.

The band i enjoy listening to most at the moment is Radiohead and I know who plays what instruments and who writes most the songs and thats it, and Thom Yorke very rarely rambles on about what his songs are about. So, i think that your argument about 'knowing too much' is completely correct.

well i never knew there was syd. i just found out it recently (like i said before i became a huge PF fan just recently). i only knew there were 4 guys playing various instruments.
so their 'dark' history was quit a shock. especially syd' s history. i wonder how is he today.

and yeah, i have a question: why were syd and david traveling in france, were they good friends and how come they don' t see each other anymore??????

an answer please
pisout, kaya

ps. does anyone know what 'kaya' means??

Yes, David and Syd were good friends, they were both from Cambridge, and Dave teached Syd something about guitar playing and the rest is history. After Syd's departure from the band David helped him to record his two solo albums, the first in collaboration with Roger Waters, the second with Rick Wright. Syd was seriously ill though, and at a point it became clear that he couldn't be a rockstar anymore and it was better for him and his mental sanity not see his former bandmates. Recently Dave stated in an interview that maybe the time has come to go and see his old friend again.

He lives a normal life in Cambridge now but this doesn't mean he could return Syd the rockstar, now he's just Roger Barrett.

Perhaps he will return, either way, it is his life.
