Trailer Trash?

Often when watching some American show on TV, a reference will be made to 'trailer trash'. I often wondered about whether this is true ,or just a label slapped on a whole community because of the behaviour of the 'odd' individual. I know that over here (UK) we have some quite luxurious caravans/trailers, and their owners are quite proud of them. So the question for the American bretheren amongst us, is, are they really 'trailer trash', and do they deserve the label?

Seen the movie "Snatch" ?

Well, trailer trash is something along the lines of the Pikes.

Re: Trailer Trash?

It's pretty much socioeconomic stereotyping in the worst way.

Perhaps there's some confusion here. Travel trailers and motorhomes are quite expensive, and are often status symbols.

Trailer trash refers to people who live in what is basically cheap, prefabricated housing in a rented space in a park. These homes are assembled, placed on a dolly, and towed to their location. That's usually the last time they move, until their eventual demolition. I have seen used trailers sell for as little as $5000 here, where rents average about $1000/month.

New ones can be quite nice, come in "double-wide" packages that can barely be distinguished from a normal home - but they are not as durable and depreciate rapidly.

I don't believe I ever saw a trailer park in the UK like we have here. Apparently, from the number of tornado stories, God doesn't care much for 'em, either.

Yup I've seen the movie 'Snatch' and I felt that it misrepresented 'Pikies' and 'Gypoes'. In the course of my work, I've visited 'travelling people' in their caravans, and the thing that surprised me the most was how clean and tidy it was inside. In some cases they were very houseproud. They take great pride in how they keep their caravans, possibly because they realise that they may need to sell it when they hit hardtimes. Fair enough, some Pikies are untidy gits, and will dump any old rubbish wherever they like, but most are not like that and are very adept at making a buck! Possibly because they never pay tax and fiddle the benefit system..but that's another story.

Anyway.....is the US equivalent worthy of the label 'trash'?

Re: Trailer Trash?

Ok...so they live in cheaper homes because they are in a lower income bracket...but does that make them trash?

Re: Trailer Trash?

I know what it is, yes they are low income, but they are ussualy kinda 'rednecks', you know?
They are pack rats and have junky yards and mullets.
Not all people that live in trailer parks are trailer trash, but some are i guess.

y'all dig it?

Most of them behave like thrash.

See I answer, even though I know you wish to not speak to me for some extremely vague reason

Like GTM says, it's a stereotype. Like most, it has some basis, but is by and large distorted and untrue. Trailers have enjoyed some resurgence among the elderly, here. They afford most of the privacy of a single-family home at a much lower cost, which is important to a retiree on a fixed income.

We had a week in a caravan in Crieff (Scotland) and it pissed down for a whole week. We sat and listened to the rain drumming on the roof and it was bloody miserable. I sat and drank Famous Grouse whisky for the week, Mrs E was not pleased and the kids moaned...... but it passed the time away
