Radiohead

I scanned the forums, and couldn't find another thread on the band (suprising, actually).
If I overlooked it, mods, please shut me down & provide a link to the thread.

Well, I was in good 'ol Wal-Mart a few weeks back, and I was just killing some time in electronics. I happened to be scanning through some CD's, and I saw Radiohead's 'Amnesiac'. I remember hearing quite a few people praise this band, and I've also heard some compare the group to Floyd themselves (I don't quite agree w/ that). Anyways, I decided that I'd give it a shot, then I remember that Wal-Mart has heaphones set up so that you can listen to certain tracks, so that's exactly what I did.

Well, it was only about 5 seconds into a track, and I was sold. Thats all it took. So I made the purchase, and listened to it on the way home -- not very good driving music, if you ask me. When I got to work, I really got a chance to listen to the album in & out, over & over. I listened to it continuously over the course of about six hours.

This was definitley unlike anything I'd heard previously, and I really liked it. The sound effects, Yorke's voice, the atmosphere, and just the album in general. Well, after that I became a Radio "head", and I knew my life and my musical tastes had change forever.

I've since then read several reviews about 'Amnesiac', and how it's not nearly as good as 'OK', or 'Bends', and I couldn't understand why people couldn't grasp it for what it is, and enjoy the ride while they're on it. The previously said albums must have been pretty damn good if 'Amnesiac' couldn't compare. The next couple of weeks, it was 'Amnesiac' over & over & over, I just couldn't get enough of it. I had to have more of this wonderful band.

I was at a used record store last week, and I picked up 'Hail to the Thief', then went to F.Y.E. (had a $10 coupon) and bought 'The Bends' for $5.99 plus tax. After that, it was a quest for the best, I had to have the rest <------sorry for the cheesy rhyme, that's just how it came out.

On the way home, I stopped at mega-retailer Wal-Mart again, and picked up the only 'Head albums they had, 'Kid A' & 'OK Cokmputer'. I decided that was quite enough for one day. I opened them up only to burn them (I rip all my new CD's), and saved the beauty for work (yes, I get to sit down & listen to music at work). When I arrived at work the next day, I decided it was time for one more spin of 'Amnesiac', and then onto 'Kid A' -- the only reason I picked this one is because I've heard countless comparisons between the two.

I must say, I was pleasently suprised. After all the "bashing" this album had gotten in reviews, I had expected a flopper. Nope, not the case. I actually liked it better than 'Amnesiac' as a whole album. Once again, I couldn't understand why people didn't embrace this album and enjoy the experience. I also begain thinking again that 'OK' & 'Bends' must be really really damn good.

A few more days, went by, more repeated listens of 'Kid A', and a few more of 'Amnesiac'. I still couldn't believe how much I liked this band, and how sincere they were in their music. Only two albums into their career & my life had already changed for the better. So earlier tonight at work, I decided to throw on 'Hail to the Thief'. Again, I've read several reveiws saying that the album isn't as good, that it doesn't stand up to their earlier stuff -- but what the hell do critics know anyway?? And why are they always making comparisons?? As said before, take it for what it is at the moment -- don't look back thinking what could have or should have been. Just listen to the album.

I only got to listen to it once through, but I was again pleasently suprised. They pulled it off again. I am very anxious to listen to it 10 or 20 more time tomorrow (seriously). I like the "trippy" sound effects & the keyboards & the atmosphere from the three albums.

For a while, I thought I was saving the best for last with 'OK' & 'Bends', but now I am a little (a LITTLE) worried that I won't like the two as much because they are more guitar heavy. At any rate, I am sure I won't be disapointed -- and I'm excited to hear all of what this band has to offer. I still have to buy 'Pablo Honey' & and album consitsing of "outtakes" & "b-sides" from the 'Kid A' & 'Amnesiac' sessions, but that's a little further down the road.

The albums I've heard so far are wonderful, and DEFINITELY require many many listens to grasp the entire idea of the albums. I am very happy with myself in taking a risk and buying that first album -- It was worth it.

It's not everyday you hear a band that changes your life.

Well glad to see you've found Radiohead. They're wonderful. Also working on new material I hear!

Oh, and not to burst your bubble, but there've been more than a few Radiohead threads on here...odd that you haven't found them.

New material -- very exciting.

My bubble has not burst, I've said what I needed to say.

Re: Radiohead

I'm hoping by fall this year...that's what it sounds like. I'm very interested to see what direction they'll be taking. HTTT seemed sort of an era ender...wrapping up the styles of OKC, Kid A, and Amnesiac. Very exciting!

Sorry, AITW, it was a great post, but there's eleven Radiohead threads already. I recommend this one.
