What should a 2005 Pink Floyd album sound like?

To succeed in the 21st century, Pink Floyd would have to observe the contemporary soundscape around them and be able to fit in, whilst obviously maintaining their unique and distinctive sound.

The closest mainstream band to Pink Floyd we've heard in the last 5 years or so has been Radiohead in my opinion, and Coldplay's latest album has a certain Floydian quality to it. There seems to be a trend towards fast riff driven rock and roll at the moment such as the Bravery and the Strokes, and Pink Floyd have been here in the past, with many notable examples in The Wall, and some less noteable ones in The Division Bell, so perhaps revisiting this in the context of modern music might not be such a bad idea.

I'd personally like both these elements to produce a sound with the power and texture of Grace by Jeff Buckley and the progressive awe of OK Computer by Radiohead (but with less nonsensical lyrics and good singing) with a dash of traditional Floydian big-theme-tackling lyrics (provided by Waters) and a sense of coherance - Pink Floyd definately need to do a new concept album to show amateurs like Green Day how it should be done!

Anyone else got any thoughts?

Re: What should a 2005 Pink Floyd album sound like?

I doubt a new album will come out unfortunately. The division bellk while clearly floyd also had quite a 90's sound to it. Same with AMLOR however it was 80's this time, quite off putting at first but it grew on me. I dont think floyd would suit riff heavy songs as it is the way thier songs constantly change that makes htem so unique and original. Anyway this is all speculation as live 8 is very likely a one off, i have to say though i would love it if they made a new album, even if it was crap Id go see them live cos theyd play some old stuff which would be graet to see.

Bollocks, all they would have to do is issue a new album and it would top the charts all over the world regardless of what it sounded like.

I seem to disagree with this considering that i am 16 and have floyds full album catalog except for "Obscured by Clouds". Pink Floyd's music is timeless and showing how there albums still have staying power that it would def sell but thats a big if all depends on if they want to do anything after live 8

The term 'yank' being good natured slang for 'American'...I would say that you qualify?

It should have a bare bones sound like Meddle or something like Niel Young. Anything but an '80s synth sound.

She's from the South...they don't like being called Yanks at all. The polite term is "redneck" or "hick" if you prefer.

I take offense. Redneck and hick are deragatory terms used to describe people who work in blue collar outdoor jobs (either North or South of the MAson-Dixon).

Southerners are normally called good ol' boys, or Southern Belles (for the ladies).

They should get out the old equipment from the seventies and change the face of music once again!
