Re: Tom Cruise. A bit of a drip?

Can we stop refering to Tom as "cute"? Puppies are cute, dashboard trolls are cute, Accessorize change purses are cute... A forty year old man is NOT cute. And by that I mean at the very least call him handsome (though he's not).

Type 'scientology' into Google, read a few hits, and decide what you want to believe. Read a bio on L. Ron Hiubbard; that'll be illuminating.

Consider the redundancy and circular logic of the name scientology. There's a start for the critical thinker.

Remember that it costs money to join, costs money to remain a member, and costs money to advance within the church - sort of like those 'real estate for no money down' pyramid scams. Ask what charitable and public services the church provides. Consider also that the church claims a scientific basis.

Remember that scientology actively recruits celebrities - and is very successful among a certain type; say, high school dropouts such as Tom Cruise.

Re: Tom Cruise. A bit of a drip?

I haven't seen it directly but apparently Tom got a bit angry at Matt Lauer when questioned about these things.

believe me, i don't support scientology by any means (or any organized religion for that matter), but it makes me laugh when religous people criticise other religions, etc.

Whether one is religious or not, religions have performed an important moral and social function over the ages. There is even a very strong argument that music and the arts only exist because of the function of religion in human social development. I believe GTM's point may have been that Scientology doesn't fall into that category - it's a con game, and you can tell because it takes and never, ever, gives. I know mine certainly was.

I'm not, btw, in any way religious.

Re: Tom Cruise. A bit of a drip?

Similarly, the idea that 'it makes me laugh when religous people criticise other religions' could be analogized thusly:

'It makes me laugh when artists criticize art.'

Who better to do so? That doesn't seem hypoctritical so much as critical.
