What kind of stratocaster?

I'm about to buy a new guitar at the end of this summer. I have always had a crush for gibson but at my last visit to the musicstore I tried a fender stratocaster and I really enjoyed it. So here is my question, what kind of stratocaster would you suggest to get the close to the sound used on "meddle" and "dsotm"?

Yeah, I've was thinking about a standard american. however I like the looks of the "deluxe player strat" but I noticed that theese have "noiseless" pickups, will this make the guitar sound not-like-gilmour? also... to bad it has gold hardware.

Re: What kind of stratocaster?

I dont know if the deluxe strat is worth the extra money. Some people think noiseless pickups lacks some sort of feeling, i really dont know. Still, Gilmour never (he might have in some point, but not his trademark anyway) uses noiseless pickups. On the other hand, i wonder now, after getting my usa strat (standard one, and not the cheap standard series), if i would have prefered the deluxe one. The boost button sounds like fun, but ive never tried one..

If you hear the difference, i really dont know. I wouldnt think so.

Re: What kind of stratocaster?

The extra money? Here(sweden) the deluxe player strat is cheaper than the american standard. I read about the deluxe in a swedish guitar-magazine yesterday and it said that the deluxe player strat is assembled in Mexico and this is what makes it cheaper.. about 30% cheaper or so.

and yeah, the boost button sound like a good twist.

this is the model i'm talking about.

Oh, that explains it. So why do you think you would have preferd the deluxe one? Anything wrong with the american standard?

Re: What kind of stratocaster?

Hey,
Kinda off topic.
I bought a standard series strat it's pretty nice. It's good starter guitar. Not very sharp looking. hehe
I'd recommend going to guitar center. I got $300 US off on my amp and guitar.

Re: What kind of stratocaster?

The "noiseless" pickups are different from "active" pickups, which is what Dave uses on his red strat.

I have noiseless PU's on my Deluxe strat, and I think the decreased hum is because of lower gain. But that's what the volume knob is for. All in all, though they're OK, I can't recommend noiseless as being any great improvement.

Actually, my favorite PU's are the Texas Specials on my SRV strat, with a Seymour Duncan "Little 59" humbucker at the bridge. Chunky!!

Re: What kind of stratocaster?

Nothing wrong with the "standard" one. But for fucks sake, do not think that im talking about the cheap standard series... The reason i would have gone for the deluxe one is mainly because of the boost button on the volume knob, but i seriously dont know. Ive just played one without an amp. So dont listen to me. It might suck.

Re: What kind of stratocaster?

As a Strat owner/player I just had to chime in here. First of all, you should love having a Strat, such a versatile guitar with a wide variety of tones and sounds. The beautiful thing about a Strat is in the complete spectrum of sound one can get, to illustrate this just think of some famous Strat players:

Jimi Hendrix
David Gilmour
Jeff Beck
SRV
Buddy Guy

You can't get much more diverse than those guys. Secondly, as far as pickups, I have Three Gold Lace Sensors on my Strat. I love them dearly. I am going to be buying a new Strat within the next six month's and I will only have Lace Sensors on it. The Lace Sensors provide, again, a wide range of options. I feel you can get a "Gilmour/Hendrix" sound fairly easily with Lace Sensors.

I believe Gilmour uses a EMG pickup that looks like a Lace Sensor, but obviously there are some differences. I have never played a Strat equiped with EMG's so I can't compare. But, the Lace Sensors are a choice you might consider!

Re: What kind of stratocaster?

Quick note Dave uses the same strat filming the dark side of the moon movie .that he uses at Live 8.Not to be a homer but the strats from the U.S. are best.

Re: What kind of stratocaster?

American Strats are not necessarily the best. Far from it actually.

The closest you will get to the Gilmour sound - without paying the big bucks for a USA Vintage Strat Reissue - is a Standard Mexican Strat. Yep, Mexican.

Every new USA made strat has pressed hardware - a big tone killer. Mexican strats are mad almost exactly as the US strats were made in the good old days.

But do beware, the only downside to the Mexican strats is the mediocre pickups. Chucking in a set of '57s, or custom shop '69s will have you creaming your pants.

So, im assuming you are in the US, well here in Australia heres how i figured it:

American Standard Strat - $~1500
American Vintage Reissue - $~3000-4000
Mexican Strat - $~800
Set of Vintage US pickups - $~150

Clearly, well to me anyway, the Mexi Strat with the upgraded pickups is the way to go for tone. But then again, make sure you go into the stor and have a thorough play of the guitar you are going to buy.

I have owned a Standard Mexi Strat, and have since upgraded to a Japanese '57 reissue, a replica of Davids black strat). They both play infinitely better than an USA made strat i have picked up in the stores.
