Re: Nick Mason

oooooh, harsh! I'm not a fan of Roger Waters either but the shitty Bass palying comment just stings! I mean I hate Roger for trying to make The Floyd "The Roger Waters band" at one point but I wouldn't call his bass playing shitty. And finally someone understands what i mean when I say that peoplple underrate drummers. Is it not drummers that keep the whole band in time!
Sorry, to the guitarists out there, but lets settle it at this: Guitarists provide the tune and drummers provide the beat. And thats all there is to it. And Mason along with Bonham was probably one of the best drummers of the era.

cheers

Re: Nick Mason

Hmmm. I don't totally agree with you there, Syd old fruit. Ach well, I suppose that differing opinions are what make this forum so interesting.

Cheers!

Re: Nick Mason

Idon't think Mason is that good...or particularly unique for that matter.

The drums on Gilmour's first solo album sound very similar (can't remember the drummer's name).

Carmen Appice (played drums with Jeff Beck's group in the 70s, and was the drummer on AMLOR) is one of the best I've heard.

Re: Nick Mason

Roger's bass-playing was shitty. Mason is not a great drummer (though compared to Lars, my 14 month old nephew banging on his Sesame Street bongos is a friggin drummer genius) but Mason is more than adequate, though he was a lot better,IMHO, pre-DSotM when Floyd was a little more ambitous musically, and cared less about the lyrics.

Re: Nick Mason

Mr. Mason clearly changed styles right after DSotM. Whether we consider that good or bad, I'd like to posit something here. You can agree or disagree with my explanation for it, but I'd like to ask a thought question here.

On TDB, which song has the most non-standard drumming/rhythm? Which one noticeably breaks away from the rest of the album in that regard? What person is/are credited with the music on that song?

Is it always the DRUMMER who is responsible for originating the song's rhythm?

Re: Nick Mason

I understand nothing in drumming, but I kinda like Nick's playing. One drum part of AHM suite still set shivers down the spine.
I like him as a person, his interviews are always quite interesting. I think he is great friend.
Nick's cool.

Re: Nick Mason

Nick is an alright drummer. Nothing too special. I quite liked his drumming on A Saucerful Of Secrets. Especially on Pompeii.

Re: Nick Mason

To answer the question why does everyone like Bonham so much, he wasn't even ll that good.

Go to your local video store and pick up a copy of The song remains the same by led Zeppelin watch it and tell me how can you not be awestruck by that 10 minute drum solo?

cheers
