Re: Waters vs. Barrett

I think that of all the quotes that could be applied to Syd Barrett, the one that rings most true is the comment made of Kurt Cobain by, of all people, Liam Gallagher:

"He was a sad **** who couldn't handle the fame"

Cheers,

Mark

Re: Waters vs. Barrett

Syd is the only one I know who "couldn`t handle the fame" but could find strength to leave everything and to return to ordinary life. He could shoot himself, he could hang himself but he didn`t.

Re: Waters vs. Barrett

A lot of people did see Syd as a pathetic wreck who couldn't handle fame but you have to understand that pink Floyd probably wouldn't be who they are without him. True his brake down was self inflicted. the thing that puzzles me though is that everyone around him knew something was wrong but noone seemed to help, they all wanted to but by the time they did it was too late. Also the people he lived with weren't much help. There was a guy called Scotty who lived with him and his thing was to go around spikng everything so Syd would wake up in the morning and drink his spiked coffee and by 8:30 he would be tripping. Then he moved into a flat with a bunch of crazed acid freaks. They were pimping him off both professionally and privatley. Jonathan Meades who was a friend of his flatmates went in there one day and there was this horriblre noise like heating pipes shaking he asked them what it was and they just giggled and said "That's Syd having a bad trip,we locked him in the linen cupboard!" So his brakedown was self inflicted but his surroundings didn't help either.
I don't know why but I still hold a great deal of respect for him.

cheers

Re: Waters vs. Barrett

But without his breakdown, we wouldn't get to hear the beautiful music they made in the 70's

Re: Waters vs. Barrett

Exactly my thoughts tnt, I'm not saying it's a good thing what happened to syd is just that if he would not have a breakdown we would not have dark side, wish, meddle, any of those.

Re: Waters vs. Barrett

Not necessarily. Roger could've still written those songs. True it's highly unlikely but u never know. Everything happens for a reason and lets b thankf ul we had him for the little while that we did.

cheers

Re: Waters vs. Barrett

What about David?

I think Floyd was the best when David, Roger, Richard, and Nick were working together

Re: Waters vs. Barrett

Floyd was the most successful when they worked together, that's right.
Otherwise, I like the sounds of their every era. Syd is my favourite, but the songs Roger, Dave, Rick & Nick have written, are also pretty good!
However, Floyd is the best band all times!

Re: Waters vs. Barrett

I discovered Floyd through DSOTM, Wish and The Wall, so just by that respect i'd say Roger. But i love Piper, but i dont think i would've picked up Syd's music if it wasnt for the later albums.
