It's an audio pun insofar as the beginning of the quote,"Isn't this where..." is at the end of The Wall and the end quote, "...we came in?" comes in, funnily enough, at the beginning.

Just for the sake of difference I'll say Syd.

It's Roger's commentary on the never-ending cycle of society. That's why, in the movie, there kids playing on the streets with the burning rubbish, etc. What one generation does to itself, the next generation is bound to pick up and screw things up just as we're screwing things up now. "Isn't this where we came in" is just a comment on this never ending cycle.

Re: Who Says "Isn't this where we came in?"

I dont think Roger is playing any character except himself. I think he's just saying that the story is universal, basically, it's not limited to Pink, or rock stars, or anyone in particular. Really the story has basically nothing to do with a fictional character called "Pink", because "Pink" is just a figure that represents in some parts Roger/Syd but in many parts everyone. It represents a cycle, i.e. the story never ends. When Pink knocked down his wall, someone else builds one, hence we "come in" again and the story starts again from In The Flesh.

Re: Who Says "Isn't this where we came in?"

But according to Roger, it IS a play on how history repeats itself. Notice how in the beginning of the wall, the tune from the last song is playing? If the two songs are put into a perfect loop with no space, it really does perfectly cycle the quote and the music. What he's trying to say is that no matter what, thre's always someone out there that does the same dumb crap you do, just later in time. For example, note that in the movie and album, Pink becomes Nazi-esque? This would be a cycle back into Hitler, the villan in Roger's life that, in a sense, took his father's life.

Interesting to consider the baby crying in The Thin Ice in light of this. In The Flesh has echoes of Speak To Me. Speak To Me to me always seemed like an expression or interpretation of the experience of being born - a mad rush into chaos / out of chaos with a woman screaming and hey presto that Angellic voice singing
Breathe. Breathe in the air. Don't be afraid to care

Mother could be seen to be an echo of...
Leave. But don't leave me.

It's a universal cycle, but also a personal idiosyncrasy of Roger's writing. God luv 'im.

Interesting point. You may be right.

The beginning heartbeat would then be the mother's, of course...the cash register could be the hospital cashier's, ringing up another $5,000 for that epidural she was just given....the "I've always been mad" voice would be dear old dad, pacing the floor......

It all fits!

haha

Obviously it doesn't all fit, but there are a lot of links lyrically between the 2 albums. The thread got me to thinking and linking.
