Re: Radiohead - The new Pink Floyd?

I read that it (the mp3 of In Rainbows) is sampled at 160Kbits, while the rest of their catalogue is available at 320Kbits. According to what I read, some fans are up in arms, seeing this as a promotional gimmick to generate sales of the $81 box set to be released later.

TANSTAAFL, I guess.

It is, and I miss records a great deal.

Vinyl is also analog, with a very high signal-to-noise ratio. Which CD's, and all other digital media, ain't.

Another example of an analog device would be the human brain.

What Jonny said they were trying to do was release it at slightly higher quality than what you'd get on iTunes.

But they didn't. AAC > MP3 at comparable bitrates.

Re: Radiohead - The new Pink Floyd?

What was the point of this release without being able to puchase it in the store. Are they without a record label now? or is this thier way of sticking it to the record company? I have heard quite a few reasons but no one seems real sure. Any idea?

Yeah pretty much. I paid 1 pound for the download, because I see it as a stop gap between now and when they release a physical product that's not $80. If people think these are their only two choices, they are wrong...there's no reason to be upset.

Re: Radiohead - The new Pink Floyd?

being that I found Radiohead's last two releases quite hard going, I'm not that interested either way. KID A remains a classic, however.

I agree with that, their recent efforts have been hard going, though i admire Radiohead for at least striving to be innovative and original. Though they lack the creative genuis mr Gilmour and mr Waters could draw upon when the chips were down.

Actually, it is a collection of some brilliant, and some not, songs.

Re: Radiohead - The new Pink Floyd?

15 step is genius, and even the not so great songs have great moments. Like the break in Bodysnatchers just before he goes "has the light gone out for you, cos the light's gone out for me"..

Though, I did really love Hail To The Thief. A lot of people hate on it, never understood why! It's what got me into them. Kid A is my favourite now though

As for why they released it like this, label wanted to release it next yr and spend the rest of this yr hyping it up. Thom didn't think it was good enough, so he went "uhh, nah we'll release it online and let people pay whatever"

Friend told me that he read that the album sold 1.4 million copies on the first day of release at an average 4 pounds....

not bad for a day's takings. Skipping over all the printing, shipping, stocking etc etc costs...

Re: Radiohead - The new Pink Floyd?

What "label"? They've been free of a contract for years.
