Re: Radiohead - The new Pink Floyd?

I think it might just be part gimmick, part genuine selflessness by the band. But that's just an outsider's opinion. I really like it, makes up for Hail to the Thief quite nicely.

I really wish they had just charged a set fee for FLAC files. Listening to it this way, especially without any artwork or lyrics or cryptic website hunts, seems a little... experientially bereft.

Re: Radiohead - The new Pink Floyd?

Saul Williams' new album release is exactly the model they should have gone with. For $0 you get complete artwork, lyrics and 192 kbps MP3 with no credit card charge whatsoever. For $5 you get 320 kbps or lossless audio.

David Byrne at Wired, taliking about music and marketing here.

Re: Radiohead - The new Pink Floyd?

Of those six possible distribution avenues he mentioned, Radiohead used at least three for In Rainbows. As a fan who has followed this band semi-religiously for over a third of my life, it STILL smells of throwing shit at a wall to see what will stick. Not necessarily a bad thing, mind you, but in the end I only wound up spending money on the damn thing last night when I quite by chance encountered the traditional CD in Wal-mart, of all places. It was quite a weird feeling.

I'm pretty sure there'll be room in the market for CD's for a long time. Until the DRM thing gets sorted out, downloads will continue to be a pain - and the lawyers show no sign of clue-intake, at this point.
