I'll save the grammar and punctuation nitpicking for another forum. I'm too easy? Too stupid? My friend, that's the pot calling the kettle black.

If all you can talk about is grammar and punctuation mistakes, then you have no business even talking to me. Your childish replies are amusing, but still pathetic. Do yourself a favor and stop before you make yourself look like a bigger ass.

Re: Radiohead - The new Pink Floyd?

I've been reading these forums on and off for the past couple of weeks or so, and for the most part have found them interesting and informative, but I have to say that some of you people seem hell-bent on keeping this place as some kind of insular social group, which it seems to me as a public forum it should not be. I've seen newbies attacked for plain ignorance - and hey, what seems obvious to you after living here for however long you have may seem less so to one unfamiliar with the way things work here, and there are better (or gentler) ways to correct people than what I've witnessed - and now people are bashed for their taste in music. I may not agree with Ministry's assessment of STP and others either, but it's his right to believe what he does and to express it - and to defend himself when under attack.

This is all just my opinion, and no one is in any way obliged to endorse it, of course.

I feel the same way. We have warned people in gentel enough ways, but the way some people attack other people for differences is sometimes... well.... mean.

Mmm...

For the record, I do not feel that STP is the next Zeppelin or Doors. I work in a record store. Record store. I sell vinyls for a living. Seen High Fidelity? That's me.

I was playing Devil's Advocate. I was posting something that would generate conversation, because it offered a completely different opinion to the original subject matter. The fact that I did it with a bit of my own flair thrown in (calling Radiohead the next Floyd obsurd), that does not necessarily mean that my entire post was filled with my opinion.

A second, less-obvious job of playing Devil's Advocate, is to weed out those who cannot understand or do not want to understand that which differs from themselves.

If eugenesaxe would care for me to go into complete and utter Analyst mode and disregard any sense of opinion, bias, or subjective idealizing whatsoever, then I will. But that would be no fun, and no one would listen. Whether their replies were alcohol enduced, or enduced by what I said, I could care less. Whether I defended myself or not, I could care less.

I wanted conversation, I gave my part. I was hoping that some people, especially eugenesaxe (given their, hrm, stature? Might not be the right word.), would come back with their reasoning when confronted with a wholly different viewpoint.

Is this still able to happen? If so, I'm willing to hug and make up. And maybe make out a bit, the flaring debate here got me all hot and bothered. :P

Hmmm...yet again I get the impression - maybe I'm just paranoid - that I'm being "got at" somehow in a very non-specific manner.

Since I have recently been given to welcoming newbies with friendly advice, I cannot say that I have ever been deliberately rude or nasty to newbies - unless religion comes into it, then Iget very carried away (or should be carried away, literally) indeed.

As for attacking new members (getting tired of the term "newbies") I cannot say that I am guilty in that respect. I can well understand the excitement of Pink Floyd fans finding this very good site, and wanting to "make one's fixxlevy...er...I mean, mark" somehow by posting new threads of interest to them. I was exactly the same.

But, as FBKness advised, I did lurk a while and read a bit and posted a reply or two before making my first original new post.
Now, historically, when a new member comes on and is an instant and obvious areshole, they usually are attacked, but sometimes it's more than they deserve. Read a bit and tell me if you can spot them.

Yeah, this is a laissez faire sort of environment and nothing can possibly stop anyone from posting as many new threads as they like, but wait until you've sepnt so much time here Cheriberi that you become incensed at yet another "What is DSotM really all about" thread. Then tell me how patient you'll be.

Fearless Floydian,
Byron

Re: Radiohead - The new Pink Floyd?

I don't know if I clarified this enough in the DSOTM thread, but I'm not putting anything on you, BoaB. I always thought your welcomes to be polite.
I also recommend lurking for a little while - I did the same thing, but that's just the person I am. I don't like to look dumb, and I certainly don't jump into things I'm unfamiliar with.

Please warn me in as rough a manner possible if I am guilty of any of this. I believe I am on the defensive for the most part.

And Cheriberi, the newbies need to step up and hold their ground. I think the ones coming in who act superior are looking to get dealt with in a critical manner. Like, why did Tarkus, for example, waste 2 pages of a thread trying to prove some point if he didn't even care enough to return? I wish he would return. As I said-the more the scarier....er, I mean merrier.

Re: Radiohead - The new Pink Floyd?

I don't think you're guilty of that. Sure, I responded to one of your posts (a LONG time ago) in anger.. but I'm sure everyone has!

And you're right about new members standing up for themselves. I had to - and I won't comment on where. I used to be on the defensive big-time, and then I learnt to sit back and chill out. I rarely post in anger anymore.

I can tell you that I was never angry when posting. In a way I feel as if what I wanted to see in terms of more respect for Waters has come true.
