Horror Movies

Last week end I went into the movies to see 'the Skeleton Key'. Being a big fan of horror movies, and having seen lots of clips on TV, I thought that this might be good. How disappointed I was, it was not in the least bit scarey. As per usual, they had stuck all the best bits together for the trailer. I started to think about the last time I saw a really good scary movie, and I had difficulty recalling when it was. It was not because I'm a senile old git as Dr Cheese would have you believe, but because IMO they don’t really make 'em anymore. Perhaps it's just me, and perhaps I've become less easy to scare. As a kid I would get scared at the old black n white movies of the Wolfman with Lon Chaney jnr or Frankenstein with Karloff. However the movies being produced now don't seem to have anything which causes you to jump. Slasher movies have become boring, although Friday 13th was good when it first came out, and as for zombies...yawn. Anyway you have heard my opinion, now I want to hear yours? Am I hard to please? Do they make good scary movies now? If so, what’s your current favourite and why?

Re: Horror Movies

The last good one I saw was Deathwatch a WWI English horror/war movie about these Brits taking over a German trench.Or is it really just a German trench? Also The Evil Dead scared the hell out of me but on a whole your right Eddy most of them are lame.I like the old classic's like Psyhco,Dracula,The night of the Hunter,The Invasion of the body Snatchers and to name a few less older ones like, Holloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Alien.

Re: Horror Movies

I saw The Grudge at the weekend, yet another Americanised version of a Japanese horror. Quite scary by today's standards I reckon, it had the women folk screaming out loud from the word go whereas I, of course, retained my manly composure throughout.

Haven't heard of Deathwatch, but like you, I also enjoyed the Evil Dead. However some of it was rather comical. You mentioned Psycho, a classic in it's time. Hitch had an excellent way of building suspense. I was never a fan of Lugosi as Dracula, and I much preferred Christopher Lee in some (one or two) of the Hammer efforts. Although whether they would count as scary is debatable. Probably not by today’s standards. The original Halloween (note the UK spelling ...ho-ho) was good, as was Freddy in Nightmare which then went on to spawn numerous reels of rubbish. I see a new movie advertised on the billboards over here called 'the Devils Rejects'? The blurb on the board says 'it is one of the most frightening films of our time'. I thought to myself ...here we go again...probably another load of sh*t....................which I will probably end up going to see. Will you ever learn Eddy? Nope!

Re: Horror Movies

I did spill some lager down my chin a couple of times I must admit, mind you I'm not altogether sure that was entirely down to the movie!

Yeah I haven't seen that Rob Zombie movie the Devils Rejects yet either but the critics canned it ah what do they know anyway. But I totally forgot about C.Lee's Dracula but I like Has Risen from the Grave alot.Lugosi is just a classic to me in that role I mean its him.Speaking of Christophor Lee The Wicker Man is pretty disturbing at the end.O yeah check out Deathwatch if you can and let me know what you think.See ya Eddy gotta take my bride to be to get fitted for her gown.

Re: Horror Movies

This is what IMDb said about the Devils Rejects

Taking dips into pure "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" torment, redneck conversation (mostly obscenities, with the occasional bestiality exchange), revenge and road picture worship, and his own unique potion of horror, Rob Zombie has met the potential of this series head-on with "The Devil's Rejects." Again, I stress this film will not be for everyone's tastes. Yet, those with a strong stomach and weak knees for terror should sprint to the theater and enjoy a second slice (after June's "High Tension") of horror that will (gasp!) genuinely horrify you.

...ah well we'll see if its true? Anyhoo I also liked the Wicker Man, and not just because of Britt Eklands body double!

Re: Horror Movies

Sounds like a right of old cobblers, I've heard The Descent (or whatever the hell it's called) is pretty good?
Anyway I'm off to watch Most Haunted ... now that's scary.

I'm deeply disappointed to learn that was a body double.

Hell of a movie, though.

That's not me you old goat, that's Yvette!

( for anyone who doesn't know what we are talking about....and there must be many......Derek Pakora is a 'medium' in a tv programme called 'Most Haunted', Sam is his spirit guide and Yvette Fielding is a daft bitch who continually jumps 3 foot in the air at the first sign of a creaky floorboard)
