Re: Which is the best Non-Pink Floyd Prog Rock Band I'd say Brick and A Passion Play were the ''proggiest'' albums they ever did. Even if it is only because of the fact that they were practically albums with one 45 minute song on it. To me A Passion Play is the best, it is the most over the top album they ever did. The concept is overblown the jams and instrumentation are overblown and the lyrics are overblown, but I love it. You probably think that Tull is not prog because they are indeed not very ''Symphonic''. But at the time they were something new and that's what made them ''progressive''. Most people associate prog rock with bands like Genesis, Yes and ELP. But they were Symphonic prog. Prog rock is rock music that is new and uses elements that were not done before. That would make so called ''neo prog'' bands like Marillion and IQ not very prog actually, because they make Symphonic rock that was progressive once but not anymore. Not that I don't love those bands though. Rant stops.

Re: Which is the best Non-Pink Floyd Prog Rock Band Never really was into Passion Play but loved Thick as a Brick.I got to hand it to you for the explanation and or/definition of Prog rock.I would never of thought of it like that.I'm gonna put on some Tull now.Probably some Sweet Dream, and Minsterel in the Gallery.

Re: Which is the best Non-Pink Floyd Prog Rock Band A Passion Play is full of pretty much structure less jams that I can see people not getting into. While I realise that Brick is musically superior I do think it is somewhat boring and repetitive and therefor I seem to like Passion Play more. You should definetely check out Stormwatch. It a is very overlooked album. But I think it's one of their best and also probably the last Tull masterpiece. I think it is superior to the somewhat overrated Aqualung.

And this is tricky...between Tull and Genesis on this one. But for the record, I think Porcupine Tree is the best of the modern prog bands (and no, they don't fall into that "neo-prog" category). |

Re: Which is the best Non-Pink Floyd Prog Rock Band The whole neo prog thing is bollocks. It's just another word for symphonic rock bands who started out in the 80's. Like Pendragon, Pallas, IQ and Marillion. The genre was invented in the late 60's and had it's peak during the 70's. In the late 70's it had nothing to do with progressive rock anymore so why anyone ever called it neo prog is beyond me. I used to think I was a prog rock fan but that's not entirely true. I love ''prog rock'' that's usually overblown and has very lengthy songs that have the same structure as a classical song. And that style of music is called ''symphonic rock'' so why not just call it that. There are so many misconceptions about the whole prog rock thing.

Re: Which is the best Non-Pink Floyd Prog Rock Band Crimson or Yes, but I voted for Crimson because they're still growing on me while Yes is doing the opposite.
