question about mother

the very last line in mother is "mother did it have to be so high" i just dont understand this, someone please explain it to me.

"It", in this context, refers to the metaphorical wall the album is named for.

it clearly makes sense... although i thought for a while that he said did "I" need to be so high...slightly different interpretations
