Hi

I considered getting the Works cd recently just so that I'd have "Embryo," and complete my Floyd catalogue at the same time, but I've never heard the song before and I don't know if it's worth getting Works just for that song. I tried going on Morpheus to find the song, but so far I haven't had any luck. Besides finding out whether the song is any good, I'd also like to know when it was recorded and who wrote it if possible. Thanks.

The version on Works sucks. It actually incomplete. If you want a good version you'll have to find a live one. I think it was written in late 1968, and it was probably recorded in 1969. But, live is the way to go on this one.

the only thing morpheus is good for is videos. the bbc version of embryo is the one you want. definitely the best version. i've also heard a 20 minute version of it but it wasn't as good.

The late 60's version that they hawked around Europe, complete with the 'whooping' samples later used on 'Echoes' is great.

Cheers,

Mark

You should Get the Live Version from
Paris Theatre in London from September 16 1970,
this version is Awesome!
And yes, the version on works sucks, and they actually put it there without the permission of the band. I Think It was a BAD Outtake or something like that.

However, I still recommend buying 'Works'. I like the spirit apparent within it, and feel that it lacks the 'heavy' factor associated with the Echoes compilation. Also, it presents a broader view of Pink Floyd through the years, as opposed to '...collection of dance songs', which isn't much cop and a bit of a graspy cash-in, if you want my opinion.

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks for the info. I'll definately look into finding a live version of the song, and I'll let you know what I think once I hear it.

Why the hell were Marooned/Keep Talking/Sorrow/Sheep/Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun/When The Tigers Broke Free/Jugband Blues/Money and those Totally Shit Cartoon Covers all on Echoes?

Cheers,

Mark

Waging a war - i see

let's not get let it get out of hand.

My response:

When the tigers broke free is (IMHO) one of Roger Waters greatest pieces as far as lyrics go. Definatley worth putting on there.
I also have a soft spot for Set the Controls and Sheep.

Bah.

Unfortunately, that doesn't go any way to validating them as being any good. 'Sheep' has merit, but pales beside 'Dogs' (which hasn't been previously included on the last official Pink Floyd compilation album).

Cheers,

Mark

Start talking about Syd's songs like that and i'll go down under to OZ and stick your Roger Waters fan club card down your throat.

Sorry my precious pumkin buns, I don't know what came over me.
