Gilmour's sound using Garageband

I've been playing comfortably numb using Garageband on my mac, but so far I cant get Dave's sound. I know tht it has a lot to do with the way HE plays, but all im trying to do is get the notes to sustain for a little bit longer. Does anyone else use Garageband?, and if so, what effects (and what edits to those effects) did you use?

Thanks a bunch!

Dynamics compression? I don't know how that works in Garageband because I've never used it.

Re: Gilmour's sound using Garageband

There has to be someone who uses GarageBand. I really would like to know what settings other people use to play Floyd Songs.

Thanks.

Re: Gilmour's sound using Garageband

I use GarageBand, but I don't use their sounds to play Floyd. All I use Garage Band for is synth sounds and electronic beats.

If I ever decide to be an idiot and buy a MAC instead of a PC, then I'll try it out.

Re: Gilmour's sound using Garageband

Well first I hope you're using a Fender Strat. As for the specific tone, you might want to use a compressor...to help extend the notes. Overdrive can be tricky with this device, but a little adjusting should yield good results. The tone seems somewhat compressed as I remember making it smoother sounding. You can get away with this by wiggling your hand a lot while playing the notes, or use the tremelo bar, which is not quite as easy. Also, dont forget the little things. Such a solo may seem too simple at first, but when you really pay attention to all the stops and lead ins...thats when you've mastered it. Hope this helps.

Let me add one more thing. LESS IS MORE. The more effects you try and squeeze in, the less natural of a sound you're getting. I generally follow the rule that just a good guitar and good amp ought to get 99% of stuff done. Sure Gilmour is all about some effects, but with each one YOU add, the more complicated you are making things, making it nearly impossible to match tones...and I take it you are not as good with effects matching as he and studio professionals are.

Re: Gilmour's sound using Garageband

Im gonna go at this a little more. You need a very CLEAN amp to start with. To get compression...you could use a pedal designed for this...or use something such as the chandler tube driver. This should add sustain as well. Occasionally, you might need a little chorus added in. A lot of the tone is still coming from te guitar itself though...and I think it'd be hard to do this with sonething other than a Fender. Hope you have good luck with it. Remember nothing's gonna be perfect here because he has such a studio sound. A lot of processing goes into it.
