Cool Who is the movie for?

Earlyier in my 'floyd listening career' i was of the mindset that everyone that likes floyd should see the movie The Wall at least once. I saw it in college for the first time which was about the same time I became a serious Floyd fan (i had just been a light fan since HighSchool) so then - later - i am about 30 now i bought it and watched it again for a second time. And i have to tell ya, i still thing that serious fans should see it, but not casual fans... i dont think it does justice to the music on the wall. And I assume that the serious fan has listened to the wall many many times before watching it. I think this because it can lock a person into one perception of what the music is and i think it can be bigger than that...

yes... no... am i up in the night???

Re: Who is the movie for?

well, I can remember watching the movie when I was quite young (and had no idea about what was pink floyd) and liking it. When I started to like the band I watched it again and liked it even more. And I know people who like the band and hate the movie. I guess it depends on the person.

It really is a genuinely conflicted piece of work. I could never quite find out who it was really supposed to have been made for. Pink Floyd fans of course, but Alan Parker and Alan Marshall evidently tried to reach out to a wider audience as well, and mostly failed. I wonder if Roger will make some more sense out of the story with this broadway musical endeavor of his.

Re: Who is the movie for?

I agree with you, its probaly better for heavier fans. I watched it with a few people who have only heard Another Brick pt2, and a guy who knows at least half the words. Non of them understood it. The way I see it, you would have to know more about the ideas and history of the album and band to really understand it.

The first time I saw it, I knew pretty much ONLY the words to The Wall, nothing else really. Didnt really understand it untill I started to really think about The Wall.

I'm afraid not. The Wall police stopped by and confiscated my copy, since I've been dieting.

Seriously... I thought (but could definitely be wrong) that the movie was intended to explain the album, since Rog took a lot of heat over the racism stuff back in '79. Too, he was very proud of the album, and wanted to expand on it some.

There's the whole part about cashing in, too - the album was very popular.

Re: Who is the movie for?

Well I'd never even heard of Floyd when I watched the Wall for the first time... it was love at first sight even though for about a year I thought the film was based on the life and breakdown of Syd

Re: Who is the movie for?

well i think the movie was aimed at just about anybody
i think it was a goal to reach to new kinds of fans. however they made it in a way that one who doesn't know pink floyd's, syds and rogers history will have tough time understanding the movie. that is why i think it failed in its original purpose to turn whole new types of people into pink floyd fans.
