Underrated Floyd songs

Ok, I've only spent a few days in this community and I know that there are already lots of threads about which is the best or worst Floyd song of a particular album, period or whatever. But I was particularly interested in your answer to this question: "Which do you think is one of the most underrated or overlooked Pink Floyd song?". They've got several numbers that we know they are not masterpieces but they've got some peculiar charm of their own and they have been rarely played live or included in a great hits record (I'm thinking about "San Tropez", "What's... Uh the Deal", "Julia Dream"...).

To set the ball rolling I would go for "Remember a Day". Yeah, the lyrics are... well... they could have been better, but I love the piano chord progressions (Rick's speciality), the dreamy slide guitar (played by Syd?) and Mason's tom-filled rhythm.

That drum part is actually played by Norman Smith, it's nevertheless an awesome song. I particularly like "Pigs on the Wing," the version with Snowy White's guitar solo. It's one of the best Pink Floyd tracks ever, I think.

Thanks for the Norman Smith reference! I didn't know it. And yes, that's a good solo the one that Snowy plays in there.

Re: Underrated Floyd songs

I think a lot of Rick Wright's songs are underrated such as 'Remember A Day', 'Stay' and 'Summer '68'. These are songs that should be common knowledge for everyone. Of course in another way it is nice to have gems all our own that non-Floydians don't know

Apart from those I'd also submit The Nile Song and Not Now John. Two fantastic hard rockers that most people would never have heard.

Summer 68 has always been one of my fave Floyd tracks, and I agree - The Nile Song is a great li'l rocker.
I'm also a huge fan of Paintbox, another superb Rick Wright track.

I quite like Paintbox, though compared to Barrett's stuff it comes across as a bit 2nd rate Syd by numbers.

However I do quite like it because it has a nice 'morning after' feel to it. To me it has a melancholic feeling that suggests a sort post 67 (or post Piper) come down. It is the song of a man who has enjoyed himself a bit, but is now in a more reflective mood and feels he ain't enjoying himself as much now.

A Pillow of Winds from Meddle would be my choice for a Floyd track that is under rated. A nice mixture of accoustic and electric guitars, the accoustic guitar carries the song while the electric guitar is played over the top of it. the song has a beatiful yearning quality to it.

Re: Underrated Floyd songs

I can't say it's underrated, more unheard, but I really like "biding my time" from relics.
it's such a great song.

I love "the final cut" and "not now john". I don't really like "dogs" though, a lot of people seem to absolutely love that song (and more power to em')

Great blues lick by Mr. Waters! And a good guitar solo too.

BTW Does anybody know who played the trumpet when they performed this song live as a part of the suite "The Man / The Journey"?

Rick played the trombone, as he does on the record.
