How do you tell what part of Shine On is what part...

Well, there are the two songs divided into 1-5 and 6-9. I've seen people refer to specific parts though, such as 8. How are these songs divided into these parts? And the same question goes for AHM. Is it just like, an intro will be one part, then a solo is another part, etc? Thanks.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Quote:
Part I (Wright, Waters, Gilmour; from :00 - 3:56) includes the fading-in of an overlayed Mini-Moog and ARP string synthesizer keyboard sound, and a lengthy guitar solo by David Gilmour on his Fender Stratocaster (neck and middle pickups,) using no distortion whatsoever and a dash of reverb. It ends when the keyboards fade into the background.

Part II (Gilmour, Waters, Wright; from 3:56 - 6:28) begins with a four-note theme repeated 6 times. This theme is sometimes referred to as Syd's Theme. This part includes a second solo by Gilmour.

Part III (Waters, Gilmour, Wright; from 6:29 - 8:43) begins with a keyboard solo by Richard Wright. This part includes a third solo.

Part IV (Gilmour, Wright, Waters; from 8:44 - 11:10) is the lead vocal from Roger Waters and the main part of the song.

Part V (Waters, from 11:11 - 13:34) has 2 guitars repeating a riff for about 1 minute. A baritone saxophone overlays the sounds, played by Dick Parry. It ends as the saxophones change from a baritone saxophone to a tenor saxophone. After, the tempo speeds up the saxophone, and eventually drops the guitar and drums and opens to an tenor saxophone solo that fades into the background. A machine-like hum fades in to bring the song to a close, and segue into Welcome to the Machine.

Part VI (Wright, Waters, Gilmour; from :00 - 4:41) begins with a howling wind sound., brought in from "Wish You Were Here". It slowly fades down as a bass beating fades in. After a few beats where the ARP String synthesizer, several rhythm guitar parts(Gilmour would play the power chord rhythm part before switching to lap steel guitar for the solo in live performances in 1977) and drums come in, a Mini-Moog Synthesizer comes in to play the opening solo. After 2 and a half minutes, Gilmour enters to play a fast beat solo using a lap steel guitar with tempo not present in the other parts of the song. It last for about 3 minutes(4 minutes when played on the In the Flesh tour) before the songs main tune and guitar solo from part 4 plays(which would be played by Snowy White in live performances so David Gilmour could switch from lap steel guitar to his Fender Stratocaster) plays and the beats slows to bring in the lyrics. This is the last time a lap steel guitar will be heard in a Roger Waters Pink Floyd song.

Part VII (Waters, Gilmour, Wright; from 4:41 - 6:05) contains the lyrics for the song's second half. Part VII is almost identical to Part 4 though half the length.

Part VIII (Gilmour, Wright, Waters; from 6:05 - 9:05) brings in Roger Waters to play a second electric guitar for a high noted sound riff while Gilmour plays the arpeggio riff that bridges parts 7 to 8. A neat progression of beats play for about 2 minutes before very slowly fading into the background as a continuous single keyboard note fades in around the 9 minute mark. When this section was played live on the band's 1977 "In The Flesh" tour, David Gilmour and Snowy White would be trading guitar solos duet which would extend this section upwards to between 5 and 10 minutes.

Part IX (Wright, from 9:05 - 12:31) is played in four-four time. The drums play for half of this part, and the keyboard plays for the final minute of the song before fading out. When played live on the 1977 tour, the synthesizer solo was changed into a harmony guitar solo by Gilmour and White before ending with the synthesizer solo as on record.
