Re: IQ (Symphonic Rock band)

Well, "prog" means moving on, not repeating something that was before.
But still I like 70`s prog better, it just sounds good to me. And I don`t listen to "new" prog that much, but I know that it doesn`t sound like in the 70`s and it doesn`t need to, because it`s "prog" (moving on, not repeating something that was before - like ELP, Yes or Genesis), they just make new music, always searching for something fresh and experimental.
I just don`t listen to new prog, because I feel enough with the same ELP, Yes, Genesis, VDGG, King Crimson. When I will feel that I need something new, and the same old stuff bores me, I will feel free to experiment. (like now I`m moving on to Gentle Giant, want to know more about this band, hear their albums and so, but sometimes I feel that I have to stop, wait and listen, not to grab the next band that I have heard of, that they make good music, so it will probably take years to get to "new" prog)

(Wow, I hope that this looks like English, not ramblings of an insane mind... )

Re: IQ (Symphonic Rock band)

Yes progressive rock is rock that is new and not done before. That's why neoprog is not ''prog''. I prefer to think of it as symphonic rock a genre that was probably invented by King Crimson with their first album. Some say the true roots lie with Moody Blues and Procul Harum. Meh, I don't care I just love that kind of music and don't see why bands today should not be allowed to make it anymore.

Re: IQ (Symphonic Rock band)

I'd say that The Beatles were progressive in a way, but symphonic, no.

They had the link to fine art via their album covers, they used orchestral instruments and quotations from Classical and Baroque composers, they had at least the idea for a long concept record, engaged less standard pop structures which approach classical ideas, applied interesting harmonic modulation, etc. etc.

Re: IQ (Symphonic Rock band)

Ok what you say may be true but that's not what symphonic rock is about. Symphonic rock is music of which the songs basically have the same structure as a classical piece and they are often very lengthy. There are long instrumental passages and the music can go from very soft to loud and bombastic. It's basically classical music but with ''modern'' instruments. The songs stand out more as compositions rather than usual songs.

Re: IQ (Symphonic Rock band)

Oh, and I never said neo-prog shouldn't be allowed to be made. I just said I don't like it, stated why, and said I don't listen to much of it. Trust me, there are several other genres I'd wipe from the face of the earth before neo-prog.

Re: IQ (Symphonic Rock band)

Avant garde basically means the same as prog rock. Something that is experimental and new. Symphonic rock was avant garde once but like I said, not anymore.

Re: IQ (Symphonic Rock band)

Hmm no, avante garde is probably a synonym for symphonic rock. Avant garde is very orchestral and bombastic.

Re: IQ (Symphonic Rock band)

No not true, avant garde is mainly used for art that is new and experimental. It has nothing to do with symphonic rock at this stage at all. The Velvet Underground were avant garde, Tom Waits has always been avant garde. And in prog we should think about bands like King Crimson, Gentle Giant and Van der Graaf Generator.

Well, I stand corrected. I'd always heard it used as such, however, and had gotten to know it with that meaning.

I suppose learning something new increased my IQ?

Actually your IQ isn't based on facts. It's based more on perception and thought process. AKA Wisdom rather than Knowledge.

These kind of ''jokes'' were the reason I added ''(symphonic rock band)'' to the thread title.
