| Re: Floyd Lives After Barrett!? In my opinion, Syd Barrett in his time was a damn good musician, he was a Crazy Diamond, a genius. I mean what would have been of Pink Floyd without him. To be honest, everything they did was great really great. And I mean, changes in bands are great: first was the Syd's era with The Piper At The Gates of Dawn, and all their eraly work, then he left. We got different album. Excellent albums. From Meddle to DSOTM, Saucerful of Secrets to Wish You Were here, all of them different but with kinda same concept. Then the 3 Water's era albums: Animals, The Wall, The Final Cut. The style changed and it was very notable. First 2 very good. Who hasn't ever heard that some people identifies Pink Floyd with The Wall. Then Rog leaves the band. We come to end with the Gilmour Era with A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell. One of my teachers consider AMLOR her favourite album. And here we have, another change. To my opinion they werent at their original level but still were great from many points of view. All of this thanks (partly) to Syd. And he has never left the band. He was on the Piper at The Gates of Dawn as the Leader. Then he took a little part in Saucerful Of Secrets, he was remembered in DSOTM's Brain Damage, and the album dedicated to him, Wish You Were Here. In The Wall, the story takes some parts of Syd's life (Roger's too). And in the Live 8, ya remember great Rog's words, at the beginning of The song Wish You Were Here?: "It's actually quite emotional standing up here with these three guys after all these years. Standing to be counted with the rest of you. Anyway, we're doing this for everyone who's not here, but particularly, of course, for Syd." See. Syd will always be part of Pink Floyd. Roger Waters, might have fought against the other 3, but he will be also part of The Floyd. Rick, Nick and Dave too. And I Love all of Floyd phases in fact!

Piper at the Gates of Dawn is my favourite Pink Floyd album so I guess I consider it Pink Floyd, but its not to be different. I am just myself, if I am different when I am myself its OK, if I'm not thats OK too |

| Re: Floyd Lives After Barrett!? Apart from being a great musician, the whole business with Syd Barrett provided the band with some great material; and that has to count for something. I think the experience with Syd was necessary in a sense because it provided the band with a chance to really take stock, mature and gain a greater understanding of what they were trying to do. The situation with Syd was tragic because he was obviously a great musician and a unique personality, but in a perverse way, the band was also able to benefit from what happened because it provided them with a different perspective. That's what I think, anyway.

| Re: Floyd Lives After Barrett!? Personally, I'm not a fan of the Syd Barrett era Floyd. I respect Syd as a songwriter/guitarist and for basically founding the band, but I enjoy Dave Gilmour's work with the band a million times more than Syd's. Put any album with Gilmour be it with PF or solo up against anything Syd ever did, and the Gilmour album wins every time for me. I hate how the media blows up the whole "victim of the 60s" thing with Syd. I think it's like how Roger said in the Floyd episode of VH1 Legends. Syd had schizophrenia and the lsd just sped up it's hold on him. The whole "what a waste" in reference to Syd is just more glorification b.s. Which I think is a pretty unfair thing to say about Barrett. It comes across like it was his fault for what happened. Yes Syd was talented. Yes his story is very sad, and Syd is responsible for whatever drugs he took. But imo it was inevitable that the mental illness took over. I think Syd was born with the disease and it's manifestation coincided with his experimentation with acid which is the saddest part imo. He probably had no idea that the lsd would worsen his condition until it was too late. Imo you cannot blame someone for that. Sorry I kinda veered a bit off topic there! |

| Re: Floyd Lives After Barrett!? I would pretty much agree with the above. At the time, the mid-'60's, LSD use was in it's infancy. No one knew what long-term problems could occur. And we had idiots like Doctor Timothy Leary telling all the kids to take it as often as possible, it was good for you. Also, as I understand, Syd had some people among his flock of hanger-ons who were, for everyone's amusement, regularly dropping acid into his drinks, food, etc. where he would unknowingly ingest it.

| Re: Floyd Lives After Barrett!? Pink Floyd were bloody terrible A momentary lapse of reason onwards.. I refuse to go anywhere near those albums. They were TURD, Syd's music wasn't. He was inspired and honest.. and non-pretenteous.. it's a joy to listen to his music.

I've read/heard the same. Whether that's the truth or just myth I dunno? It dosen't matter what one's stance on drugs is, imo doing that to someone is just flat out wrong. From what I gather dosing people was pretty common back then. The Grateful Dead were known for doing that to people backstage at shows. To the point where if you wanted a coke with just coke in it, you'd have better have brought it with you and never have it leave your sight. If you drank anything backstage, left your drink unattended, or accepted a drink from anyone related to the band it was pretty much a guarantee that you'd be high as a kite. |

| Re: Floyd Lives After Barrett!? Syd is practicly, the inspration for all PF albums, not only did he write everything to get the on the scene in the first place but their 3 bestselling albums, The Wall, Darkside, WYWH, were based on syd. So yes Pink Floyd was better off with him to begin with, it's just the music turned out to be better without him. However I do still love allof Syd's stuff, he was truely a visonary, Shine On.

I can almost garuntee none of us would be talking about Pink Floyd right now, most likely cause most of us would have never have heard them except on late night infomercials selling compilations with the likes of Strawberry Alarm Clock and the Fifth Dimension.
