Bands or songs influenced by the Floyd

Just looking at past threads I read one where the similarity between "Echoes" and "Across the Universe" was being discussed. It could quite possibly be that Roger Waters was unconsciously influenced by Lennon's lyrics since he admired him so much.

But it often happens the other way round. Since Pink Floyd is so seminal in rock history there are several bands and songs where you can easily detect the Floyd influence. Radiohead is the most obvious example but sometimes you can listen to songs by bands which are not so obviously influenced by the Floyd but, still, you can trace some simlarity, and then you realize that the people who wrote the song must have been listening to PF.

For example, sometimes, when I listen to Type O Negative I wonder if this group would sound the same if Pink Floyd didn't make all those experiments with tape effects. There are several "mini-songs" by Type O Negative which are clearly a reference to "Speak to Me". Also, on the "World Coming Down" album there's one song called "Who Will Save the Sane" which reminds me a lot the Pink Floyd sound.

What similarities or influences have you found in other bands or songs?

How is Radiohead the "most obvious" example?

Re: Bands or songs influenced by the Floyd

Well, perhaps there are more examples but, generally, this is the one that comes to mind to a lot of people when thinking about bands that have followed PF's legacy. When I listen to songs like "Pyramid Song" or "Sail to the Moon" I think about Pink Floyd. Also, I see some similarities between "OK Computer" and "Wish You Were Here" in terms of the general message they both try to get through. I think that a lot of Radiohead songs talk also about absence and how the modern world can become a really hollow and sad place leading even to madness. But, as always, this is just my opinion... "I might be wrong"...

Well, for unusual, I guess, I can definitely see Pink Floyd's influence in Nine Inch Nails and System Of A Down.

Personally I hear almost no Floyd in Radiohead.

But I think Floyd, being such a breakthrough band, has influenced hundreds of bands, even if only in minor ways (such as the sound bite on R.E.M.'s "Exhuming McCarthy").

in the song "Silent lucidity" from Queensryche (which whom were coming to mexico otc 19 and they just called me from ticketmaster that they had cancelled ) i can clearly hear the influence of the pink floyd. to be more specific influenced by the Wall album.

Some of the Mars Volta's ambient breakdowns are relatively floyd-esque.

Have you heard of Eloy? Midnght Fight / Victory of Mental Force starts almost exactly like One Of These Days. The album Dawn has a floydian sound.

Yeah, there's some Floyd in Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor is a well-known admirer of The Wall).

It may sound strange but one song that remembers me a bit the Floyd sound is "Fear" in Lenny Kravitz's first album.

Re: Bands or songs influenced by the Floyd

I've just been listening to an album by John Zorn and Mike Patton called "Hemophiliac". I'm trying to discover now the works of John Zorn since AnimalInTheWall told me that he was into "dark atmospheric" music (and into a lot of other things as I'm finding out now). The first song in this double CD is called "Skin Eruptions" and lasts about 12 minutes. If you listen to the end of the song there are VERY CLEAR references (I think they are even samplers) to "Several Species of Whatever..." and "The Grand Vizier's Garden Party".

I knew Pink Floyd has influenced a lot of other bands but I never imagined that those two "songs" in particular could be the source of inspiration to other musicians.

BTW, John Zorn's album is really, really weird. Quite hard to listen to for more than half an hour (or even less).

Yeah, he's got some unorthodox musical styles. But the man has got his hands into about everything. He does some feestyle jazz type stuff, he's got a "grindcore"-esque project with one of the guys from Napalm Death, and he does quite a bit of "modern classical" music.

There are plenty of Zorn albums that are very relaxing to listen to.Spillane is one I highly recommend; it's sort of a jazz/electric blues type sound. The Circle Maker is another wonderful album. It's classical music with a Jewish feel thrown in. Any of his many, many Masada albums are great. But the one I suggest the most would have to be Love, Madness, and Mysticism. Once again, it's a classical affair, strings, pianos, etc.; but it is much darker this time around.

Just because a band is good doesn't mean they're necessarily Floyd-influenced.

Re: Bands or songs influenced by the Floyd

I think Stevie Ray Vaughan based his entire career off of "Seamus".

Also, there's a bit of Chorus effect on the guitar solo in "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. Kurt's Chorus pedal was made by the same company who makes the Big Muff, which is the most famous pedal for getting Dave's sound. Yep, Nirvana is pretty much a clone of the Floyd.
