I havn't listened to phish or SCI, but I have heard a few songs by oysterhead and, even though they are great musicians, the music was unfocused and unappealing to me.

I have A Live One by Phish and it's rather good. Especially Tweezer and You Enjoy Myself.

No I havent heard SCI's cover of walk this way but ill be sure to download it.

What do you mean by Oysterhead being unfocused? I think Grand Pecking Order is the best album I've heard in years. Seeing Oysterhead live was quite a trip as well.

Believe me, mates, you don't wanna know. They're both what are cosidered "jam bands". Most of them are f***ing horrible, but they're f***ing huge here in the states. In the UK and elsewhere, where musical tastes are considerably more refined, they never caught on. Thank God. Dave Matthews Band, Phish, String Cheese Incident = shite. Oysterhead isn't half bad I suppose, but I'm not into them either. Sorry, guitarmangreg, hadda get that out.

In their live shows, I suppose they do. Dave Matthews Band does not. These bands in general focus on free-form jams, though not in a progressive rock sense. String Cheese Incident isn't really even a rock band, it's bluegrass. Phish is a hippy throwback band. Not exactly my speed. Be happy they stayed away from Oz. It should also be noted that these bands' shows are known for their drug use. Their shows are less about the music than getting stoned. Believe me, I know, all of my pothead friends listen to them.

Thats your opinion about those bands being shit. Yes it is about free-form jams, shows of great musicianship.

The shows are not more about drugs than the music, they're whatever you make of them. Me and all the other guys I know who are big into jambands and are actually in a jamband have never touched a drug in our life. To be honest, I've heard more people talk about drugs here than I've ever heard at any Phish board. Also, the Rog Waters concert I went to had more people worried about smokin weed then any Moe. or Phish show Ive been to.

By the way, Dave Matthews Band is hardly a jam band. They're what i would call MTV's version of a jamband.

A Jamband is exaclty that, a band that jams.

What a jam band will do is just take a song, and explore different parts of the song by improvising over serperate parts of it or improvising brand new parts, basically just playing what you feel for as long as you feel.

HHmmmm, everyone I know that says they hate Phish, only hate them until they actually LISTEN to them. It is pretty trendy right now to hate things that are trendy. By the way, I knew of Phish before they were trendy.
