I read an article from an English music magazine (which shall remain nameless)...but its analysis of DSOTM left me speechless!!
Here's what it said:

QUOTE
"This is not only far from being the best album ever made, it is far from being the best Pink Floyd album ever made. Its longevity has more to do with a moment in the seventies when 'serious' lovers of hi-fi needed an album to showcase their state-of-the-art equipment. That Waters' lyrics were tritely anti-materialisticwas an irony not quite lost on these people; it merely enhanced the album's prestige. Waters considered it was high time PF lost their psychedelic baggage and make an important statement. However, his remarks on the passage of time on 'Time' or against war on 'Us and Them' are trite and portentous. 'On the Run', prasied by Phillip Glass as an early example of minimalist synth-rock, is one of the few moments on the album that is a harbinger for the musical future"
END QUOTE

Surley something was lost when this writer heard the album? In fairness the story concentrated on Syd but, no doubt, DSOTM is an excellent album.

It might be easier to judge this review if we had a few details, such as when it was written, by whom, if the critic has ever played in a band, made money from his songs, performed Live, created an album whose time in the charts can be measured in decades rather than weeks, has a global following, etc., etc.

I suspect the answers to my last few questions are negative, in which case, I feel one should listen to someone else's opinion.

The guy that wrote it is just one of the magazine's writers and the article was written last year i'd guess, or at least since 1995 when PULSE was released.

Ahhh, merely a writer then? Not a decades-experienced Rock artist.
Well, there's your answer.

I also read this. I can't remember exactly which section from which magazine that it's lifted, but I'm pretty sure that it's one of those 'reputations reassessed' pieces, which really only serve to incite a barrage of printables for the letters page of whatever magazine that it comes from. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's also slagged off Miles, Morrison, Macy, Kurt and other respected rock'n' pop luminaries of the last 50 years that are viewed as untouchable (except for the last 3).

I don't care much, I know what I think.

Cheers,

Mark

We are all entitled to our own tastes.

If someone else doesn't like something that I do, well, then, so be it.

I personally take offence of what he said and therefore consider his words to be utter garbage not worth reading.

It was in UNCUT magazine's 22 page PF special (I am looking at it right now), it was a great shock to me too. First time I ever heard anyone say anything bad about DSOTM. I was sure this dude hadn't even heard the album just said something to cause contreversy.

cheers

I will say this much about that reviewer's opinions: unlike most of you all, at least he has the courtesy to ELABORATE on WHY he holds the opinions he does on Dark Side of the Moon. He lists his reasons, many of which are difficlt to counter using primarily factual argumentation. It's all a matter of opinion, and I'm afraid that those who express their opinions and then bother to back them up with more than the typical "that's just what I think!" rhetoric deserve to be heard and discussed more than those who don't.
