Under-appreciated; "Any Colour You Like"

Any colour you like is my favourite pf song, yet its not very well recognised, more of a filler, the making of Dark Side doesnt even metion in it. It would have to be one of the best Gilmour guitar solo's, so lyrical, spaced and well timed. Anyone else agree, if not why do you think this is so?

its a great song, in my opinion, although some may see it as filler. I too was a little disappointed that it wasnt on the making of dsotm dvd

I used to think that any colour you like was useless, but after several repeat plays, I have to say that I truly enjoy it now.

Re: Under-appreciated; "Any Colour You Like"

The reason people consider it a filler is because it's kind of a transition song (like On The Run). It's like..helping you switch from the somber tone of Us & Them to a slightly more happy sounding (it's not happy but you know what i mean, it's a little lighter to listen to) ending. It's a great song but often not considered a "SONG".

Instrumentals are often overlooked. I enjoy that track very much too.

I think the instrumentals are some of the best songs on the highly regarded DSOTM release;

ACYL is really just the "breathe" chord progression played faster & in a different key,..which is probably why it wasn't considered worthy of mention in the DVD documentary

They should have had Nick play it, he's the only one who doesn't demonstrate his part on the album.

I always thought his drumming on Money was pretty impressive.

Re: Under-appreciated; "Any Colour You Like"

I absolutely adore Any Colour You Like. The keyboard work is sheer bliss (but absolutely slaughtered in the PULSE version) and the guitar solo is one of Gilmour's best. The way the solo alternates between the left and right channels, the crashing drums and the delayed keyboard scales make it the most trippy sounscape I've ever heard, and blows the previous benchmark, Tomorrow Never Knows by the Beatles, completely out of the water. In my opionion, Us and Them without Any Colour You Like on the end is incomplete. So I completely agree - it's under-appreciated.

But what does it mean? Which pressure of life does it represent? In my opinion it's trying to keep up with fashions and trends, the right colours and all that... its something which I'm sure will drive me to lunacy in the near future.

Right on. The R/L channel bounce is great fun to listen to. The first time I listened to the album after tokin' the giggly, I didn't want ACYL to end. Hypnotic and trancey, it deserves more props than it gets. The version on Dub Side of the Moon with the trenchtown horns is also a worthy copy. That low down brass is smokin'.

Yup!
I love ACYL. But rather than consider it an add-on to Us & Them, I have to hear it before Brain Damage.

Re: Under-appreciated; "Any Colour You Like"

If any song on darkside is a filler its On The Run. In the making of movie they show how Dave made it, just by pushing four buttons. They should have stuck with 'The Travelling Section'.

Any Colour you like is one of my favourite songs on darkside. why they skipped it on the making of Darkside is beyond me. Just another Pink Floyd Documentary that dosent cover all the basis i.e. Pink Floyd crictical Review
