Re: Who said that the final cut is bad???

If TFC is considered a Waters solo album, it is his best, IMO. If for no other reason than Gilmour is on it.

I relate to Roger's angst over the failure of the "post-war dream" to come to fruition...if there ever was a post war dream. I mean, "man o' steel" had Eastern Europe under his thumb & the cold war was at full throttle before the Nazis surrendered....Although, Water's "post-war dream" may have been that all of Europe would embrace communism.

That being said, I was not fond of Water's bashing of Thatcher.

When I first got it, I listened to it every day for probably a month. But not often since.

I did think the tracks from TFC that Waters played on his In The Flesh tour were pretty good. After I watched the DVD a few times I got TFC, but I was very dissapointed, because it was a lot worse than the live version I had seen on Waters' DVD. The live version had much more substance, making those songs much better than the studio version, which really lacks any substance at all, IMO.

I don't think it had anything to do with communism, just world peace.

Re: Who said that the final cut is bad???

When I first bought the album, I didnt like it very much the first time through. But as I became a dedicated Waters fan, I listened to it again with more of an open mind, and I have to admit its grown on me. You can tell Rick Wright isnt there, but other than that, I think its a very solid album. I think Gilmours guitar work on TFC was much better than any of the new Floyd stuff...

In an interview with a norwegian newspaper in 1992 when "Amused to Death" was released, I think Roger used the phrase "a kind of communism" to describe his ideology. I'll try to go to the library this week, and hope to find the complete interview.

TFC really depresses me. But I do like a lot of the music on it as well as the lyrics. I can't get into NNJ or Fletcher Memorial Home though.

I feel that a lot of the music on TFC is simply brilliant and timeless, particularly its first half, and the words are sheer poetry.

Roger definitely subscribes to a Socialist worldview, but I don't think that any particular ideology is what he expressly means by the post-war dream. "They all agreed with hand on heart / to sheathe the sacrificial knives" and "a place[...] where you can speak out loud about your doubts and fears / and what's more / no one ever disappears / you'll never hear their standard issue kicking in your door" points to a utopian view of peace and freedom, not necessarily cessation of commerce. If anybody can point to a specific reference, I'd gladly revise my view...

"One of the Few" was definitely written for The Wall, possibly "The Hero's Return" and the title track as well.

Re: Who said that the final cut is bad???

When it comes down to it, the fans, the general public, the critics, the reviews and 3/4 of the band said that the Final Cut is bad.

That remaining 1/4 of the band aside, it's still pretty definitive.

Lots of critics raved about it at the time and afterwards. But what do they know...

Re: Who said that the final cut is bad???

Rolling Stone called it the best Floyd album ever. I wouldn't go that far, but it definitely is in my top 5 and probably my second most listened to album.

As for Rog's post-war dream, I think it has, like Bots said, a lot to do with world peace but I also feel that Rog was left down by the fact that England couldn't even lead by example.

I believe it was Theodore Roosevelt who said it first.

It's possible I'm wrong. Highly unlikely, but possible.
