Hey! You said Catalan!! (not a lot of foreign people are aware that Catalonia is a region inside Spain with its own language, culture, traditions, etc...).

I live just 30 km away from Barcelona, in a town called Terrassa. I go to Barcelona a lot of times though. I've just been there this morning in an Italian course.

I thought you were American or British. Because of your perfect English probably.

Yes, i know that. To me catalan, Castilan, Galician or Euskera are very similar, but i know that they are differente languages ( Why Catalan people don't understand Castilan? I know this!).

About 2 years ago, i went to Barcelona (btw a beautiful city) and Terrassa it's not strange to me.

I'm agreed with Lars, your english is too good that we forget you are Catalan!

Well, in fact Catalan people understand Castillian. They are all very similar languages since they all come from Latin except from Euskera in the Basque Country which is a mistery to most linguists (nobody knows where it came from, it seems to be one of the most ancient languages in Europe).

I was there once or twice and it's not very different from Spain to me, but that's just me.

Re: Roger sounding like a bit of an asshole again...

i was once in Barcelona, i was like 6 ..yes 6 then i started with school, my mom went to some..errr...we call it "Seminar" you know like science meeting (programming and information systems), so she took me with her of course, and we were placed in one lovely place called Fioret de Mar ( please correct me, i really don't know the real name), just few km from Barcelona

i remember mom's collegues took me with them to night bars!!!!!
and it was april so i remember i had been swimming in the sea
really nice towns, Barcelona and that Fioret...

and i even managed to get lost!!! heh, mom took me to some open market to buy presents for our families and as usual when it comes to shopping, i got bored (can you believe, me being a girl who hates to go shopping well exception are music and books and socks)
so i just..hm...looked around, went to park and straight to hotel, where else - to the swimming pool. what a looney were i
mom looked all over to me, went to policemen...well she said to me she wasn't that scared cause she assumed that i went to buy ice cream or to hotel, but she never thought about swimming pool.
okay i don't know why i just wrote that, thought it might be interesting.

cheers
i'm off to earn some money
Ves

"Lloret de Mar". It's a highly turistic place in "Costa Brava" full of foregin people (English above all).

Hum, maybe Catalan people understand Castilan, but if somewhere Castilan goes to Catalonia, it's very complicated talking with Catalan people and vice versa of course. I'm talking about rivalry between this 2 regions, it's not true?

Yes, we have beautiful cities and places too. Cities it's like other european cities, very similar each others ( Lisbon, Oporto, Coimbra, Braga, Évora). But we have wonderful places to visit. When you visit Portugal, talk to me.

Yes. All Catalan people understand Castillian but people from outside Catalonia don't understand Catalan. This is sometimes a problem when we've got foreign students coming to our universities. They sometimes come to Barcelona thinking that the classes will be in Spanish when in fact they are all normally in Catalan.

About the rivalry... Yes, there's a whole big issue about Catalonia being a part of Spain or being independent (the classical rivalry between the footbal teams "Real Madrid" and "Fútbol Club Barcelona" is just one example). This controversy is growing stronger now as there is a whole new set of laws which has been designed to give more independence to Catalonia and is being now discussed in Parliament.

This issue is so big that it could start a new threat of its own. I've got very mixed emotions about it. I have grown up here but I was born in Andalusia as well as my parents. We are immigrants and I don't see any problem in feeling both Spanish and Catalan. Unfortunately, some people see this as a problem.
