| Re: Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop! Becks Guitar Shop is a masterpiece - good choice. Now run, don't walk and purchase "Truth" a truly great rock album. In fact, that is one I will put on the "Greatest Rock Album" thread I have everyone of his albums. Also recommend Beckology which I JUST bought at a household sale for $3 |

| Re: Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop! I agree with the wayward one there all great. My fave is still Blow by Blow and There & Back is great. I saw Beck on tour with the Guitar Shop Album and he opened for SRV. What a show. |

| Re: Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop! I have Guitar Shop, but have not listened to it for quite awhile. Beck plays some incredible "stunt guitar" on it, but somehow, it doesn't hook me. I bet it was an awesome live show, however...as some of you have testified. In this sense, to me, he's a lot like Vai. Incredible command of the instrument, but too often, more gimmickry than enjoyable music. |

| Boy that must have been a rockin' concert, chewchew. I would love to have seen SRV (rip) in concert. Something funny: I was just listening to an early Double Trouble album, "In Step", a few minutes before I got online and saw this post. But back to JB - I revise my recommendation to Thursdays Child, "Blow by Blow" is definitely the one to grab. "Truth" is a real sentimental favorite of mine. Stratman, this is funny too: Last night over a couple pints of Yeungling and Bass, a guitar slinging buddy of mine said almost the same thing you did about JB- only he was talking about Joe Satriani. Ever since Hendrix opened up a lot of eyes and minds about what could be done on electric, well the "gimmicks" began to flow and be heard. I think Eddie Van Halen may be the only hard rocker who doesn't use anything to alter his sound - and Eddie is damn good. If you mean "gimmicky" like what I call "noodle notey" where the artist trys to hard just to put a crapload of notes in as small a space as possible as fast as possible without regard to the feel of the piece, I don't see it. Even the late great SRV is often guilty being noodle notey - Satriani does it a LOT. On the whole I can agree with you - but then we have to admit to gimmickry as just a part of electric. That's OK by me |

SRV can lick'em and eat 'em too;gimmicks as you defined if used as in regard of what the guitarist can do to show off than its like using a ladies razor to shave off your handlebar moustaches QUEER !!! but if the artist can put it to work i.e if it enhances the whole piece then its useful art.Beck does it but in Guitar Shop he does it to provide the various Guitar Makes Sounds.BTW; are you talking about "TRUTH & BECKOLA"? I have got "Muddy Waters Blues-tribute to Muddy Waters" an album where Beck And Gilmour appear doing their own take on Good Morning Little School Girl!!- Steve Ray Vaughan is one of the few Guitar Gods that I do collect otherwise I tend to stay out of vai etc. but i do like g3. Itsa Hi Ho Silver Lining..... |

| Re: Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop! To me, hands down, "Who Else!" is the album of choice when it comes to Beck. I've got both Guitar Shop and his (1977) Jeff Beck with Jan Hammer Group Live, but nothing compares to Who Else! |

| Well, everyone is bit partial to Beck's WHO ELSE;thats why I'm on a shopping prowl for the album.Though I've got loads of tapes on which he has appeared as guest artist.Even though Stratman thinks that Jeff Beck's Finger Do The Stunt While They Strum;I may sympathise with his View on Vai;Can't Digest this so called NewAge Guitarsists;Does anyone else think ;Having Love Of HotRods in Common;Nick Mason And Jeff Beck Make A Nice Pair????? |

| Re: Who Else-But Jeff Beck at his best? Quote:
Don't get me wrong, Thursday, I really do like Beck. By "gimmickry" I was referring to the title track of this particular album where Jeff makes his guitar sound like a high-speed grinder, a pneumatic wrench, etc.....very creative, but not what I would want to listen to on a regular basis. I agree that most of Beck's best stuff was live performances with other artists. The one he performed with Eric Clapton called "Since We've Ended As Lovers" is one of the most jawdropping pieces of guitar craftsmanship I've ever heard. I listen to that over and over. On Satriani: Yes, he's into pinch harmonics, too heavy on the Wah pedal, likes to break into an 'occasional' shredfest....but he's also very melody oriented and dabbles in the blues, which I like. Satch is very very heavily influenced by Hendrix, and uses basically the same effects as Jimi did. You might say he's the modern extension of Hendrix. | Re: Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop! stratman - I like the way you write and interpret things. Me thinks you are an axeman in your own right? "Since we ended up as lovers" is definitely a choice piece - one of my favorites. I have it on a mixed CD with Satriani's "Always With Me, Always With You" SRV's "Riviera Paradise" , King Crimson "I Talk To the Wind" and a dozen other songs that are just beautiful to listen to without driving your mom and dad out of the room. You know, you can enjoy tunes over Thanksgiving dinner by some pretty heavy hitters without driving the 'rents out of the room. Then you can really drop some jaws around the table when dear old mum says "this is nice music. who is it?" I am open to suggestions for other tunes to add to my "Rock Easy CD" - (by K-tel , call now, operators are standing on their heads to take your order )Off I go as always (listening to Van Halen "Jump" ) |
