Smile Hi! Just joined (obviously)

Hi Everyone,

I am completely new to Pink Floyd. I think it's probably impossible to have not heard bits of Another Brick in the Wall, but that was all I'd heard. I saw the video of The Wall Live in Berlin and was hooked. That was in August, and since then I have become sort of obsessed , which may or may not be a good thing! I'm a graduate student at University of Oregon (but not from here), and I'm supposed to be working on a final right now. I feel pretty isolated here, which might be why I am relating to some of the songs so much. I'm looking forward to meeting people and learning more about Pink Floyd!

It is perfectly ok. I have been listening to Floyd for close to 25 years now & I am 40 now. There is so much melancholy in their music. It can really touch the soul & kinda detach u from the day to day humdrum of life. Their earlier albums were less mundane & more universal. U could listen to it without any social attachments or bearing to our day to day life. However over the years as the character of music & the fans changed mainly due to social changes in our society music too had to deal with human complexities, relationship conflics/love/hate/sex & so on.

Floyd too for economic reasons & survival had to choose this path & their albums too started to deal with society...eg The Wall/Dark Side of the Moon etc.. The band also split & partly regrouped. The 2 main forces Roger Waters & Dave Gilmour had personality conflicts & had to break-up. Waters went his way & made solo albums which had good lyrical value but below average in its music content. Gilmour tried to regroup the other members of the parent band & made 2 albums under the floyd banner. It was very rich in music but average in lyrical value.

I can suggest u a compilation of floyd which u may listen & give yr opinion.

1. Echoes, 2. Shine on u crazy diamond I & II, 3. Comfortably numb, 4. Pigs on the wing (all parts), 5. Astronomy Domine 6. Set the controls for the heart of the sun. 7. Arnold Layne, 8. Wish u were here, 9. Run like Hell, 10. Cymbaline, 11. Obscured by thr Clouds, 12. One of these days/Pillow of Winds/Fearless, 13. Mudmen, 14. saucerful of Secrets, 15. If, 16. Atom Heart Mother, 17. See Emily Play, 18. Careful with that Axe, 19. Burning Bridges, 20. Speak to me, 21. Breathe, 22. Us n Them, 23. Brain Damage/Eclipse, 24. 2 suns in the sunset

Happy listening......Kannan
