Does anyone know if Dave was one of the first guitarists to make good use of delays, echoes, and generally overall spacey guiatr sounds that we know him for?

Even though Dave was technically a better guitarist than Syd he learnt a lot from Syd. And a lot of the stuff he is famous for he picked up by watching Syd.
When he first joined the band he was good at a lot of Hendrix type stuff and he was doing good covers so the Floyd said play like Syd.

cheers

I think that you'll find that the opposite is true. It was Dave who taught Syd a lot of his technique and introduced Syd to his 'effects box'.

Cheers,

Mark

Maybe, but Syd used them with the Floyd. Dave however did not with Jokers Wild. Yes, Syd was basically a very amateur player.

Uhhh...sorry to butt in here, but the venerable Mr. Les Paul was probably the first to play an electric guitar through an effects pedal. And he pre-dated Barret by at least one generation (and didn't need LSD to make it all sound groovy, either).

As far as trippy, "weird" sound effects, you'd have to go back to the thirties and forties, to people like Leo Theremin, et. al. Those guys were the real, original psychodelic music makers.

"At least learn how to spell psychedellic!"
"You both spelt it wrong."

Ok, so that you both get some sleep tonight and don't habe nightmares, here's the correct English spelling:
P-s-y-c-h-e-d-e-l-i-c

An dats de trooth, bros!

I doubt Les Paul used affects pedals. He actually hates the electric guitar because it "created" rock and roll music.
Plus I don't think Gilmour is really a psychedelic guitar player, at least not in the traditional sense.
