I completely disagree here. I think that About Face has nothing to do with AMLOR: in terms of sound and songwriting that's really poles apart IMO. Matter of fact I quite like AMLOR but I think About Face is a miserable piece of... plastic apart from a couple of decent songs!

"Blue Light" is the most horrendous piece of trash. That is all.

I like About Face a little more than the debut, but they are both good. I heard that they were going to be reissued in March, but I can't find them anywhere.

There are several instrumentals and Gilmour's guitar is quite prominent ("Mihalis" is an excellent track). The second one is OK too but I don't like some of the songs there ("Blue Light" being for me one of the low points in the album). The production values are also wider so, being the guitar still the centre of the album, there is much more instrumentation, keyboards, a whole orchestra and a lot of stars invited (Pino Palladino, Steve Winwood, John Lord...). For me, "About Face" is an anticipation of what "MLoR" came to be three years later.

Guess that means I'll enjoy both.

Re: David Gilmour Albums Worth Picking Up?

His first solo album is easily his best imo. "About Face" I liked, but it wasn't as good as the first one "David Gilmour".

Buy both, as they are both good, imo, and make up your own mind. As, obviously, everyone has different tastes and opinions, you'll find you can't really rely on a strangers opinion.

Shine on

I'd say that they're all worth picking up (if you don't have a Frisbee at hand).

I like all three....and I stress the word like. For every good song I think there are at least two crap songs. although I do like On An Island.

I would just go out and buy them if I were you... Do not listen to the bitter anti-David people here.

However, if you are gonna dabble in David's solo discs, make sure you check out Roger's as well. Roger's are also badass.

Re: David Gilmour Albums Worth Picking Up?

I agree, About Face isn't quite as good but it's enjoyable, Syd was always my fav solo floyd, but DG is second.
