David Gilmour Albums Worth Picking Up?

Of course I'm going to pick up OAI, but are the other worth picking up. I'm not sure how many he has, since I've only followed floyd, but if any are worth picking up what would you suggest? Also what are they like?

Re: David Gilmour Albums Worth Picking Up?

He's got two solo albums "David Gilmour" (1978) and "About Face" (1984). I like both of them but my favourite is the first one. There are several instrumentals and Gilmour's guitar is quite prominent ("Mihalis" is an excellent track). The second one is OK too but I don't like some of the songs there ("Blue Light" being for me one of the low points in the album). The production values are also wider so, being the guitar still the centre of the album, there is much more instrumentation, keyboards, a whole orchestra and a lot of stars invited (Pino Palladino, Steve Winwood, John Lord...). For me, "About Face" is an anticipation of what "MLoR" came to be three years later.

So, my suggestion would be: if you like the guitar sound in "Animals" (specially in "Dogs") you'll like the first album, if you like MLoR and are not too annoyed by 80's production values you'll enjoy "About Face".

That about sums it up perfectly. I would buy both if I were you. If you like Dave A LOT, like I do, they are worth it. While you are at it, I do suggest you pick up all of Roger's solo efforts, and Rick's as well. They are all quite good, in my opinion....

Re: David Gilmour Albums Worth Picking Up?

I don't believe any of them are worth picking up, I'd say downloading suits them better.

Re: David Gilmour Albums Worth Picking Up?

I got both on vinyl, used, for 5 dollars each and I'd say that the one that I'd consider buying on cd so that I could listen to it more often would be the first one (self-titled).

Re: David Gilmour Albums Worth Picking Up?

About Face may not have quite the overall appeal that David Gilmour has, but Murder alone makes it worth having.
