Queens of the Stone Age

Having recently purchased their live DVD/CD set Over the Years and Through the Woods, I find myself completely won over by its charisma and catchiness — especially that hunky JOSH HOMME!

The band also rocks heartily live, I watched them open for NIN twice last year and it was unforgettable. Screw anyone who says they're no good without Nick O.; the bonus archival performances on the DVD prove that he was great but the band has never sounded better now that he's gone.

I like Queens of the Stone Age. I only have "Rated R" but I've heard other stuff and it's great.

One of the better bands to play on SNL in recent years, unfortunately, that's the only listen I've had of them.

I saw them open for NIN too...to be honest, they did nothing for me. I found myself struggling to stay awake, I was that bored. My biggest problem with them was the vocalist...talk about a prick! For some reason or other he was arguing with someone in the audience, making some of the worst comebacks I have heard in my life...no, seriously.

Yeah, but he can be really funny as well. They aren't really the same type of band as NIN, that's for sure. Strange how long it took me to convert to being a fan, though!

Favourite songs: Regular John, Lost Art of Keeping A Secret, No One Knows, Long Slow Goodbye, I Wanna Make It Wit Chu

I really like No One Knows and Go With the Flow, but I haven't heard anything else by them. Might be one of those bands that's worth looking into.

I heard a few songs and only "No one knows" seems to me a good song. That's not my style.

Re: Queens of the Stone Age

The new live version of "No One Knows" is really trippy, lots of start/stopping, an extended (beatless) guitar solo, and even a few a capella sections. Josh's voice filled the entire arena when I saw them in Toronto, it was spooky.

"Burn the Witch" and "Long Slow Goodbye" are also amazing live.

Re: Queens of the Stone Age

Never sounded better without Nick? Did you ever GO to one of the Songs for the Deaf concerts?

I picked up a copy of the new live album, and to be honest, it wasn't a good representation of the band live. . .and if it is, then the band truly has slipped into mediocrity without Oliveri and Lanegan.

The show I went to - where it wasn't Homme on some front man trip, was fantastic. The latest album was a severe disappointment after "Songs for the Deaf", which I'd put up as one of the all time great rock albums.

No. I've heard plenty of recordings though, and I find the rhythm section has gotten a lot cleaner, tighter and funkier since he left.

I saw them twice without those two (or Natasha Shneider for that matter), and it was phenomenal; brutalizing even —just about the furthest from mediocre you can get in hard arena rock.

Re: Queens of the Stone Age

Don't get me wrong, the band live I'm sure is still better than the majority of anything else playing at the moment, but I still find the last albums (Lullabies) very poor and dull compared to their last effort.

As far as the shows go, I don't doubt they're good, but from the recording and bootlegging I've seen, the fun isn't there. There is no energy. No variety. And I'm not the only one, I know a lot of people who went to the Songs for the Deaf concerts AND the Lullabies concerts and said that whilst they were good gigs, they weren't phenomenal like they were on the Deaf tours.

Although, the bootleg of the recent concert where John Garcia came out and they knocked around some Kyuss tunes kicked some f**king ass, and hard. One just begs for a Kyuss reunion.

Re: Queens of the Stone Age

Has anyone else has magically discovered this band since their last record, Era Vulgaris, came out? It's a wonderful LP and I don't care about the naysayers -- they always deliver the goods as a live band, no matter who's playing with them.

Re: Queens of the Stone Age

I've also seen Them Crooked Vultures live (one of Josh's other projects outside of the Queens... with a couple other guys you may have heard of — namely John Paul Jones and Dave Grohl). They were great, and I love their album, but QotSA still has a better catalog of songs for my money. They're going back on the road in August and word is that they're re-releasing their slightly obscure first self-titled album around the same time.
