Re: Did Pink Floyd rip off Porcupine Tree?

Well, they DID use a lot of presets on TDB. Those are the default settings that come with modern synthesizers, so you don't have to bother looking for new sounds. I wouldn't be surprised if the same patches were used on a dozen other albums.

Sheer laziness, really.

Hah, this thread is funny. Usually the accusations are the opposite. In either case, both are bollocks.

I think it was at least decent for BDG to strip all synth to bare.

Stone the crows!
But everyone knows that TDB was Gilmours project for the most part, obviously he had collaboration from Nick and Rick but, I am sure that everything on that album is like at least %80 pure Gilmour. And all synth sounds the same to me, and the Floyd had already proven themselves as experts with synth with Dark Side and Animals, I cant see why after success like that they would then try to cheat and copy someone else. And if you remember the George Harrison My Sweet Lord lawsuit, nobody is above being sued, and if this was indeed taken from anywhere else dont you think that someone would have seen the cash registers ringing in their eyes?

Re: Did Pink Floyd rip off Porcupine Tree?

No, because you see, everyone rips everyone else's synth patches off. It's common practice.

Nope. I just listened to the tracks in question. Similarities - yes. Rip-off? Nope.

And for the record - I do like PT... a lot. After I heard "In Absentia", I managed to get my hands on Coma Divine, Signify etc.

I can't seem to get enough of "Waiting Phase I/II" from Signify....

PorcTree is awesome. I saw them at Berklee in September. I definitely suggest checking out "Signify" or "Deadwing"

I think there is already a thread for ironic remarks somewhere in the forum.

In the words of the bard Willie Nelson "why don't we settle down boys and steal each other's songs..." In other words, it happens all the time BUT is still neat to find the similarities - that means you're listening and enjoying music, not just collecting it just see how many tunes you can cram into your iPod.

You have convinced me to check out PT though I have never even heard of them. Thanks for the new music lead. One of the reasons I love this forum
