Thumbs up Indomitable spirit: The fight of one woman...

... for the rights of others.

A Remarkable story.

Quote:
In the twilight world of Musahars, an untouchable community in India, Girija Devi is a shining exception.

After leading a spirited drive to root out alcoholism and get the government to work for her community in the troubled state of Bihar, she has become the first woman from her community of rat-eaters to address a United Nations convention.

Musahars are so poor that their staple diet often comprises mice.

On 27 February, the unlettered Girija Devi will lead five women from India at the international meeting to talk about the status of women. She will speak in her local Bhojpuri dialect.

"I will speak for the equal rights of women and try to draw the attention of the world to women in my state," she says.

Great lady.....I think she's a real hero---unlike the pseudo ones like Arundhati Roy....and her ilk..who just want to grab headlines instead of getting down to work.Do you know 'bout the lady from AndhraPradesh who along with her husband has turned the whole unfertile barren land of the village into "Timbakatu" -now its a lush green piece of land.(p.s. my dialect from birthplace is also Bhojpuri!, from Gazipur distt.)

That's incredible. It really drives me crazy that people like that have to practically kill themselves to get a word in edgewise while others hog the public ear to say nothing at all. Good for her!

TC : In sentiment, I agree with you.

However, I think the culprit in large is society in general.

Some of our traditions are wonderful - but I think most are just asinine and beyond ridiculous. The really sad aspect of our nation is that we have good laws, decent morals but nobody with the balls to uphold them... especially the common man. We are the FIRST to try and "short cut" the Law and try to bend corners to our advantage.

We are a fatalistic people TC - we believe a little too much in "karma" -- "What is fated to happen, will happen and there is nothing I can do about it".

Jo hoga so hoga. Ye sabh Bhagvan ki kripa hai. Ham kya jar sakte hain? is a very common refrain among our people.

Unless our very mnetality changes, we'll need to rely on the courageous few to carry the torch.

By the way: How much do you want to bet that there have been threats delivered against her? Mostly by insecure men?

TC :: Bhojpuri eh? Are you a native of Lcuknow? Or Rajasthan? My cousin used to be stationed near Barmer (1st Armoured Division). One of our closest family friends are from Lucknow.

Nope m from Ghazipur near Varanasi;though living in Kanpur. My relatives/freinds are many in LKO too.
IMHO;the one +ve belief of us is that GOD is in everything...not a materialistic thing..but all the nature,trees,earth,water,fire....hence we never exploit the living things/farm animals/forest hunting etc. just b'cos a Particular GOD told these denigens that "Earth is YourS To Consume!!All living things except their ow n kind, are god's gift to them ,trees for fire, animals for food, forests for wood, rocks for mining etc...
Have you seen the movie "Godmother"/"Aisa (waisa) Bhi Hota Hai"/and the best one "SWADES"? Swades is the movie that echoes my sentiments...

Need to see Swades.

I hope it's not anything like "Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani"

No,though i did like the sofisticated humour of "Oh Darling Yeh Hai India"-Javed Jaffery in one of his best role.
Swades is enterily diff. poignant and the scene where SRK declares
Quote:
"No we are not the greatest country....Some of our traditions are wonderful - but I think most are just asinine and beyond ridiculous....but nobody with the balls to uphold them... especially the common man. we believe a little too much in "karma" -- "What is fated to happen, will happen and there is nothing I can do about it".Jo hoga so hoga. Ye sabh Bhagvan ki kripa hai. Ham kya jar sakte hain? is a very common refrain among our people.Arre yeh to hamare bujurgo ki paramapara hai...!!"Unless our very mentality changes, we'll need to rely on the courageous few to carry the torch.I don't see the progress you folks refer to..you ask me why is India different from USA(where SRK is employed at NASA in the movie)-All i saw was that a weaver of cloth(julaha) who tried to better his family's future turned to agriculture..only to be boycotted by the village folks...logic being a julaha can only spin cloth and not farm crops.."

I kind of watched the movie just cos of SRK. and as expected from Ashutosh Gowariker, the movie definitely has a nice concept.
Apart from the music, actress, this that.. I did like two things in particular:
1. The plight of Indian villages, the education system, differences on basis of castes etc. are shown quite well.
2. They (thanks to God) didn't criticize USA and its culture.
The particular dialogue where SRK speaks about US culture, being different to ours and the very fact that we can't "alone" move on by our ideals and all is amazing..
Something we always forget...
what I learned from the movie is as simple as:
"A debate is not won by proving someone wrong, it is won by proving yourself right."
Its foolishness to criticize USA for somethng or the other... be its political or economic policies or that "so called" western culture (the kind of bad elements in it)
Its we who have to rise.
Music from Rehman was not upto "my" expectations.
Movie was quite simple, but concept was really nice.. the idea.

I saw this movie and although the sentiments behind it might be good, I don't think that you can take it practically.
How can you expect a scientist leaving NASA and going back to India where he has not set future in the village.maybe they should make a movie showing what has happened to him 10-15 years down the line. i am pretty sure that he will be back in USA.

You didn't get the ending did you;SRK says he'll go back to India and join Bhabha or any other such ;since he's not into it for money...amd they didn't need to show what he did when he's back in India..the last scene shows him blending in the people down to earth and deriving simple pleasures from simple ways of the village folks!!! Did you wanted to see him getting married ,going to office etc.????

The best scene is the one when he accepts the glass of water for 25 paisa from the kid....if you didnotice how in the 80 % of the movie he's only drinking Bisleri...but the kid .....tears well my eyes...
