"Real" Pink FLoyd

The other day my girlfriend and I were discussing what constitutes real pink floyd. She claims after TFC that pink floyd is no longer pink floyd since they are without roger, I chimmed in to say that if that were true than TFC cannot be 'real' since it was missing richard and furthermore anything after a saucerful cannot be 'real' since they were without Syd. I really think that everything is how you see it or want to see it; WYWH-TFC were more roger dominated and without him of course AMLOR and DB would be more of david

what you guys think?

Re: "Real" Pink FLoyd

One could argue that everything before Saucer was made by Syd Barrett and "his band". This is to say the Piper lineup was a vehicle for Syd Barrett. So IMO, the real Pink Floyd produced the albums that were collaboritive efforts, from Saucer to The Wall.

Re: "Real" Pink FLoyd

the piper line up could've been something to get Syd started but we all know he did much of nothing afterwards and almost had to be babysat during studio sessions for madcap and barret, I agree that the floyd was a colabortive effort but considering gilmour only wrote a few things for animals and even less for the wall, the colabortive would have to be from saucer-wwyh

Pink Floyd are four men named Nicholas B. Mason, Richard W. Wright, David J. Gilmour, and George Roger Waters.

Legally, Pink Floyd is a corporation made up of those four men, their lawyers, accountants, business partners, and marketers.

Pink Floyd has done not a whole lot but sell rehashed albums and T-shirts for the past few years.

Re: "Real" Pink FLoyd

I came to the conclusion (some time ago) that there are a lot of "realities" out there. Every point of view adopted by every individual person could constitute one "reality". Though, of course, there are always some general trends. So, the "real" Pink Floyd could be the one you consider to be so.

Re: "Real" Pink FLoyd

I dont know what "real" Pink Floyd is. I know what the best Pink Floyd is, Roger, Nick, Rick and David. But how do you define real? There is no way really. Since from the beggining to the end of their lifetime as a band they have produced good, popular albums, by that you could say Nick and Rick are the key ingredient for success.

I totally stopped debating over what consists of 'real' floyd. I think all of it, from piper to tdb is floyd. there are different eras, but it is all one grand musical experience...

Re: "Real" Pink FLoyd

here it is:

i think that you cant say theres a REAL pink floyd, (in fact i partly love PF due to its "un-real-ness").. i think that theres never been same floyds throughout the albums. not the same saucerful without that skinny guy that really had something incredible and mysterious passing through his head. not even quite close to that beautiful album of dsotm. and nothing to do with the wall or tdb.
Even though, we could say that the band passed through different "faces" (the syd times, the roger times, the dave times) and that TFC is really alike to the wall but to me its not that good, or that AMLOR or TDB have a very similar sound, but really in the deep theyre are all different, and this enormous variety is what makes me interested in PF, it is what makes me love and identify with PF.
i cant imagine a PF with same sound and records... not to critisize ACDC, cause i do like it alot, but that band had same sound year after year (though that sound IS the sound of hard rock)...
but to me PF is much more than a rock band.. it could be said to be a cult or dont know what else,.. but PF is in fact a band for really knowers (and i say this because in my opinion PF is not one of those band that you buy one famoues record from then and you like it i think PF is to really know the meaning, the reason, the beginning, the end), its a band thats much more than The Wall/Another Brick in the W. or a prism reflecting the colors of the light,or than the song WYWH or that band of the big pigs and colorful lights... PF is the band,... is a band that for me is more than i could have ever imagined, that could be the REAL PF....
Floyd's category inside prog rock is Space rock... and the first time i saw it i completely agreed.. because i thought: "yeah.. that's it.. PF makes me feel like if i was on the dark side of the moon, or in another galaxy, or very near the stars,...dunno what exactly but very far from here flying"...

So the real pink floyd the one band that started with syd ideas and passed through stages and that ended in an album that was million of light years away from the Piper at the Gates of D. .. and indeed thats is true they had nothing to do with each other..
but its also true that of "million of lights years away" cause to me pink floyd from the beginning went out from earth and made a space trip from the start (PATGOD) to the end (TDB), and we love and appreciate the "astronauts" and their discoverys, (now im very inspired) .. and i know also that one of those tripulants never got down from the spaceship, and i know although he is still in earth, he keeps travelling through the stars (a true man to admire in my opinion...if we could only know what went and what is goinf through his mind)... those TRUE 5 Floydians and thier work will never be forgotten by me, by floydians, by mankind, and by their alien friends they made on their trip.....
i know there will never be something like this...

well i hope that the ones that read this can identify with PF the same way as I, and leave their opinion.. (if not, well dont judge negatively just respect my point of view)

*note: by talking about space trips and all that i DONT want to express or say that PF work was drug oriented, cause thats false.. i instead say that its mastermind oriented, its points of view and i say that they just had no limits to their thoughts and sights and really expressed themselves, they talked with the brain and also with the heart (contrasting other musicians...)

THANKS

Re: "Real" Pink FLoyd

I agree with Not Now John.... The Floyd is a rather huge monster... its head is reared by marketing ploys. Its more business than anything. Which is why I like the Floyd era where Waters was such a domiant force in the band, foreseeing and fighting the dangers, although not in democratic ways, but really, what very popular band in the 70's was democratic???
